Muizen Things to Do

  • The storks.

When I was a kid I went to school by bike. I passed by behind the parc , on the canals dike. There always used to be fisher men with company: The storks. Waiting for them to catch something and then they would get the fish. Now there are many many more of them. They breed quit well. They even go south for the winter and return to have offspring.(if...

  • Children's zoo

Planckendael has got a children's petting zoo with goats, sheep and lama's.I find it amazing to watch the children there...

  • High in the trees

You'll discover how water 'travels' trough a tree. In this lime-tree forest, first you'll go in a tunnel to see the roots of a tree, afterwards you'll climb your way up and walk 'in' the trees.

  • Wildlife protection

Animal park Planckendael is involved in a international breeding program. The program includes several species, like the indian rhinoceros, grevy zebra, przewalski horse, bonobo, arabian oryx, indian lion, cheetah, europian otter, ...

  • African village

All the animals are grouped by continent and it shows... in the African part of the park they build a little village. Fun for children and adults, because every house gives information about the animals.

  • The animals

Directions where to go, are all over the park, but you can buy yourself a guide for 3 euro, that includes a map, some information about the animals and a few games for children.Although Planckendael has got a panda in their logo... the symbol of the park is the white stork. You can take a look at my pictures of theanimals.

  • One of the best zoos in...

Planckendael was bought in 1956 by the royal society for zoology antwerp.Only the last years it has developed into a complete zoo.The great advantage is that it is spacious , 40 hectares , that makes it 4 times bigger then the Antwer zoo. The highlights - a 3000 square meters Bonobo island-an African village-walking high in the trees on an iron...

  • The lucky bastards...

Since Planckendael is very spacious it has great opportunity to show a lot of large animals like deer , antiloop , bovine , banteng , lama....a wonderful collection. The nice thing is the parc is divided in different parts...and each part has animals from one continent.

  • The Indian rhinoceros...

The animal parc has got a special breeding program for this animals...and that is necessary since there are only 1700 animals left (and thats an optimistic figure). There are just 9 protected areas where the rhinos live in India and Nepal. They can be 2 meters high and weight up to 2200 kg. Breeding seems to go very well , but it is ofcourse also...

You've got the choice of several shops/take-a-ways who serve fries, burgers and sandwiches.
The 'real' restaurant is the White Stork, at the main entrance of the park.
