If you want to see a tipically medieval village in Flanders, Zichem will suit you well.
I will add some pictures soon.
A famous place in Christian history. Became big when Isabella (from Albrecht and Isabella) demanded a basilic in this place, for the virgin Mary. Even today, it is a famous place where people come and visit the basilic.
Averbode is also a part of the multi-village city of Scherpenheuvel-Zichem. It is famous for its abbey and ice cream (strange combination, but who cares). There is also a theme park called "De Vijvers" (the pools). Visit the website!
Zichem in itself is way off the beaten path for foreigners. Still the village of Zichem and the city of Scherpenheuvel are worth seeing, because in the earlier days (middle ages for Zichem and new times for Scherpenheuvel) they both were big.
