Gruuthuse Hof: Good food and service; convenient to museums
When you visit Belgium, Brugge is a wonderful day trip. We were in a gite in the country and took a canal boat into Brugge one day. We liked it so well, we returned again later in the week. There is so much to do, museums, churches, street entertainers, canals and canal rides and if you are a French fry fan, there is even a Frite Museum.
We ate on the Markt Square the first day and while sightseeing later found a marvelous restaurant that was not open but promised to be open on Friday so we used that as our excuse to return on Friday. Hence, on our second day in Brugge we ate in the Gruuthuse Hof and it was wonderful. It's near a couple famous museums and churches so convenient at lunch time.
They are closed Weds. and Thurs.
Favorite Dish: We looked at the posted menu outside and decided the 16.80 euro Menu Touristique looked perfect. We started with a generous serving of a beautifully-spiced carrot soup followed by salmon and salad for Ed and a half roast chicken and salad for me. This is Belgium so we also received a large bowl of frites with a small bowl of mayonnaise for dipping.
Dessert was included so Ed got ice cream and I opted for the profiterolles followed by an espresso.
The entire meal was delightful and the service excellent. We had a window seat so could watch the tourists riding by in horse and carriage, people going back and forth on bicycles and the occasional brave automobile driver. It's a busy intersection so lots of fun to sit and watch the busy people outside from delivery boys to tourists.

Gruuthuse Hof: Most Expensive but the best.
This restaurant was pointed out to us by our guide on an " orientation" walk soon after we arrived. She said she had not eaten there herself but it was consistently praised by her clients. One couple in our group went there on their first night - liked it so much they went to no other restaurant.
We went on our last evening in Brugge. It was hot and humid and we knew the attractive indoor restaurant was not air conditioned so took the last remaining pavement table.
Our neighbours were a family from South Africa whose table was later taken by a familly from Belarus.
Not the best of locations at a buy junction - to begin with buses and cars were whizzing round the corner from three directions - but thankfully the traffic calmed down by the time our meals were served.
The food was certainly the best we had on this trip and well worth waiting for - particularly as we had interesting conversations with our neighbours.
Favorite Dish: We decided to just have one course; I ordered a pan-fried tuna steak which came topped with a tower medley of carefully chosen, beautifully cooked vegetables, a delicious light sauce dressing, some additional vegetables - delicate new green beans, and plum tomatoes for garnish. All perfectly cooked and presented.
John chose an Aberdeen Angus steak - cooked exactly as he ordered, with vegetables - again cooked to perfection, and frites.
We were offered - and accepted - fresh cherry pie afterwards. Absolutely delicious.
A bottle of bourgogne pinotage, water and coffee took the bill to92 euros 55.
But we had enjoyed it more than any other and felt we had had something special to remember on our last night in Brugge.
Gruuthuse Hof: Gruuthuse Hof
This nice restaurant, with stepgable facade, has been established in 1955. It's the third generation that runs the place. The restaurant has kept its old-fashioned style but it's very clean and service is very good.
Good Belgian cuisine with local specialties like Flemish stew and Waterzooi.
Closed on Wednesdays.
Favorite Dish: Their shrimp croquettes are to die for !!!
So are the mussels !!!
