One of the benefits of having a husband who enjoys competitive open water swimming is that open water swimming is a world wide sport and I get to take cool trips to indulge his hobby-London, Windsor in both England and Canada, Annecy, Cork, Dublin, San Francisco and now Brugge.
This event was held on September 3, 2011, organized into two categories, the more serious swimmers went in the 1st waves, I think it may have been the end of the season and some sort of Belgian championship. They let my husband join the "swimjoggers" in the 2nd wave, both with several subcategories-men, boys, girls, women and breaststroke. Even the "swimjoggers" were competitive, the route for both was 1000 meters. The entry fee was a mere 5€, they gave everyone a medal for finishing the race and they gave my husband a nice towel with scenes from a prior year's race.
They had a bus running from the finish line to the starting point although the route was walkable
Equipment: Wetsuits were allowed but not mandatory, the water temperature in the canal is pretty cold, or at least that was what was reported to me as I'm not silly enough to swim in a canal.

The picture shows Thomas Voeckler - member of the French team Bouygues Telecom.
Thomas Voeckler is the French National Champion, easy to recognise at the colours of his shirt. he was also strongly supported by the cycling supporters.

Discovery Channel a ver strong team with good young cyclists like Stijn Devolder, Leif Hoste. And of course the Boss himself, Mister Lance Armstrong.
