The Market Square is centrally located in Bruges. It's a good starting point for your exploration through the city.
It's an attractive and car-free square. The main monument is the belfry tower and the cloth hall. On the Northern side you will find the Provincial Court. There are quite some restaurants and shops located in the former private houses and guild houses on the Market Square.

In the centre of the Market Square you will find the statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter De Coninck, two popular local heroes, who played a leading part in the resistance against the French occupation in the 14th century.

The first thing you should do when visiting Bruges is going to the Tourist Office. They offer some great walking tours to get acquainted with the highlights or off the beaten paths of Bruges.
The tourist office is located in a nice building on a lovely square called Burg.

Here is where you'll see the beautiful Provincial court, the Post Office of Brugge and also the house of the Governor of the Province of West-Flanders. Not forgettting the horse carriages. You can also pose a picture with the horse carriages for free!

Not everything is Gothic in this city. Not even when it looks Gothic. This provincial court is neo-Gothic and dates from the 19th century. It took almost 30 years before it was completed. I must admit I was fooled to believe it was much older.

This building is a fairly modern one, dating back to the 19th century. After the buildings on that site were destroyed, new ones were built in a Neo-Gothic style. Then in 1850 it became the seat of the provincial government.

And watch ice skating. At Christmas time, there is a winter market selling everything from soaps, clothes, jewellery, chocolates and alcohol. We stood watching people skate drinking flavoured vodka to keep warm. Great place to find late Christmas presents.

Jan Breydel en Pieter De Coninck were the heroes of Flanders during the Brugse Metten and Battle of the Gulden Spurs (1302) They stood up against the French and made Flanders independent from the French empire. The monument has only been built in 1887 and is the central piece of the Market Square.

I really love the look of this neo-gothic style building - especially at night when it is lit wonderfully.
Unlike many people think this is not the town hall, the town hall you will find a few metres away at the next square! Provinciaal Hof is home for the Governor of the Province of West-Flanders as well as Brugge's main post office.

The beautiful main square of the city. I could stand here for ages just admiring the houses. I'd never eat in one of those restaurants there, though. They sound like tourist traps to me ...
The chipper van in front of the belfry is another story though. It serves great belgian "frites" with lovely sauces! When we were here in winter (!) there was a long queue of people wanting chips!
