Favorite thing: Damme is a little villange not far from Brugges. It is known for the book stores and the book market.Stolling in the village gives you a special fleeling; also with a bike it very nice to visit the surounding area. You can also take the boat from Brugges
"Het Zwin" is a nature preserve for birds, located NE of Brugge.
This preserve was developped by the gradually growth of sandbanks in the channels form Brugge to the Northsea. A process of many many years since the Middle Ages.
This picture was taken in Winter at the border of Belgium with the Netherlands, in a town called Retranchement.
The nature preserve can be visited too. Take your rubber boots with you!
Brugge is only 5 kilometers from Damme. As the center of Brugge cannot be reached by car, I'd advice to take a bus or to rent a bike in Damme.
We parked our car in Damme, took a cup of coffee in one of the multiple cafés there and then made the trip by bike to Brugge.
Visiting Brugge by bike is an unique experience.
Damme is such a little town (in fact it's a city!), and so rural, that this is the view you have in the main street "Kerkstraat" at the opposite side of the church and at only 50 meters from the "Grand Place" :-)
Don't get me wrong, I think Damme is the most sympathetic town in the region, and I just can't get enough of it!
Probably only interesting for people who know the Dutch language: Damme is known for its books (book market, auctions, presentations...)
Every second Sunday of the month there is a market in front of the Town hall, where about 40 exhibitors sale old and new books.
Though books in foreign languages can be found here, the greater part are Dutch books.
Fondest memory: When you're coming by car and park on the parking south of Damme (next to the Damse Vaart), you can walk to the village via a small and lovely walking path starting on the parking and going along a little canal called Zuidervaartje. It's really a nice walk. We enjoyed it very much. Back on the street, you'll need to go left to end up on the market square.
Fondest memory: We went to Damme for one day, when staying at the Belgian Coast. It was a nice sunny day out. We did not only enjoy the lovely town but also had a nice walk around Damme. It's nice walking next to the canal. It's very relaxing. See more pics of the surroundings in my travelogue.
Since 1st May 1997, Damme has officially become a Booktown. More than 10 shops specialise in one or other kind of books.
Every second Sunday of the month, there is also a book market on the Market Square.
Good to know: the post office is located behind the little door right from the stairs in the Town Hall.
There is also an ATM.
