It was not until the end of the 19th century that 3 rich gentlemen discovered this beautiful place with a magnificent beach and dune landscape. They decided to create a coastal town in "Belle Epoque" style. This is what makes De Haan so unique. The town was totally created by one architect.

This way of catching fresh seafood is and was a tradition at the west coast of Belgium - De Panne Nieuwpoort and Middelkerke - but you can enjoy it in De Haan aswell - during piek tourist season !!

Until 1885, "De Haan" was nothing more than a little fishing place of no meanings, with only a little custom-house and a few cottages for the fishermen.
