This area is special for the fauna (birds) because it has a special feature - the water from the North Sea, in time of the tide, pours here and then slowly evaporates under the sun .. making it a great habitat. The area is also protected from the sea winds. I saw there some persons coming especially to look at the vegetation growing here. It seems that here are also some rare species of water plants.

Can't tell you much about the North Sea, just that it wsa pretty cold these June days, and I don't know how it could get warm anytime of the year. Looks pretty "north" and cold to me. Also windy.
This is a great spot from Het Zwin to take a photo of the sea .. of course if you do not have a clouded sky.

As in any natural reservation that has birds, a binocular is very recommended. I guess many bird watchers come here and it's just a paradise for them. You can make an entire 'discovery like' documentary observing the life of birds here.

After the numerous pretty ducks wondering arround and begging for food in Het Zwin, of course the majestic swan makes it's appearance. This wonderful big white beauty dominates the lakes. And the ducks too .. one should try to stand between the swan and the food thrown by tourist .. and it's flying time .. without prior notice :)

Though they may have some other interesting worms and stuff to eat, they don't refuse some snacks (bread .. etc) from tourists.

Yeah..it had to be an angry one too :) This one came for the camera. I know that gooses has pretty sharp teeth, so it's better to stay away. Guess this was the 'dominant male' :)

The stork's nest. Happy family here. You do need a long tele zoom lens to get close to the action.

Het Zwin is also a nice home for the storks. Although they stay away from water and preffer wandering arround for food, they are really nice birds.

As in any butterfly garden, inside there is humid and hot athmosphere. Tip: Be careful not to step on the resting butterflies that end up on the pavement. You wouldn't want to harm them.
