Ypres by Martinewezel The Last Post The Last Post association was found by thankful civilians after the Great war in 1928. Since then, every day at 8pm no matter how bad the weather may be, clarionplayers blow the Last Post at the Menin Gate to commemorate the fallen and missed and fallen soldiers. Also the fallen soldiers of the then enemy are recalled during this ceremony. (The picture and the text is more clear when you enlarge it) Leave a Comment

If you are interested in seeing one of the trenches from WWI, the Yorkshire trench is a reconstructed British trench located at the original spot. You can walk down into the trenches for an idea what it was like to be inside the confined and claustraphobic area that these soldiers fought in. There's no charge to see the trench. It's is located near the village of Boezinge and was a little hard to find even with a map that we got from the tourist office. We had to get out 2 or 3 times and ask for directions, it's located on a street that is filled with industrial buildings which disappointed my husband a bit, sort of hard to imagine the battlefield with a bunch of concrete buildings surrounding it. This website has directions and some further information on the trench. The tourism office had a list of several other trenches that could be visited, several of them had admission fees. Cycle the Countryside,Ieper,West Flanders,Belgium. by Greggor58, 2 more photos Grab yourself a bicycle at the train station in Ieper...The surrounding countryside is beautiful and perfect for a ride exploring War Memorials or just to change up your pace of life for a day or two...and get yourself out into the countryside... There are many towns within kilometers of each other...you would be hard pressed to find yourself stranded anywhere within a few hours or even minutes of Ieper...Its perfectly safe...depending on our fitness level and your ability to ride... There are marked routes to follow if you so choose..these routes are created for vehicles but the roads that I traveled on are certainly safe for cycling.. You can grab a map at the Information Center in the Lakenhalle or Cloth Hall...

Memorial Museum Passchendaele by Martinewezel This museum about the Great War and the battle of Passchendaele is new since 2004. The location, in the Normandy- style castle of Zonnebeke is absolutely fabulous. If not going for the museum, go for the park and the castle! Authentic pictures, dioramas and a large collection of historical objects, remains of the war... This is very interesting and different from the museum "In Flander's Fields": the reconstruction of a British dug-out in the 6 m deep cellars of the castle, with a communication- and red cross post, head quarters and sleeping-place. Complete with sound, faint discontinuous light, water- pump, mouldy smell etc. Exact location: in the park of Zonnebeke, a few kilometers east of Ypres. To visit the several "war" spots, is perfectly possible to rent a bike in Ypres. Leave a Comment

Grote Markt by bugalugs Brugge is a very easy and compact place to get around on foot. Although you can take a canal boat ride, which we did, or even hire a bicycle. We stayed in a really nice Guest House that offered Bed and Breakfast. Please see my Brugge page Leave a Comment

Ypres area by Martinewezel We visited the British "Canada Farm cemetery" in Elverdinghe, between Ypres and Poperinge. It's just one of multiple small army cemeteries in the region. It's not really a special attraction, but once immerged into the "Great War atmosphere", it's a poignant place. Leave a Comment

Ypres by Martinewezel It's a signposted car route of 82 kilometers, which opens up the region of Ieper, Heuvelland, Zonnebeke and Poperinge with numerous First World War Sites, cemeteries and monuments. If you are an addict of the Great War, this route is highly recommended. Leave a Comment

Cleo bathing by Luchonda Visiting a famous "Cheese factory" called Passendale The "Oude Kaasmakerij" or how milk in life is important has been written history for almost as long as anyone can remember. Cleopatra, the divine queen ruler of Egypt is a witness. According to scores of tradition, Cleo the charming queen of Egypt owed her beauty to the fact that she bathed in asses milk every day. This milk contains no casein. It is certainly possible to bathe in asses' milk, in contrast to cow milk. Asses' milk doesn't turn into a mass of thick dirt on account of different temperature and constant movement Leave a Comment

Shooting position of a Wellington Rifle by JosM After a walk across the ramparts of Ypres, we were too early to attend the Last Post performance and thus we entered the pub 't Klein Rijssel for a drink. When entering we immediately remarked a man dressed in an old-fashioned military uniform. We crossed, found a place on the terrace, and had our drinks. A few minutes later the uniformed man crossed our seats and I asked him if we had missed or if we might expect one or another performance. Then he said: "No, I'm on my way to Waterloo. I just stopped by to show my uniform to the host's son. I'm dressed as a Wellington Rifle and I will attend a revival of the Battle of Waterloo" He showed us his replica of the rifle (made in India) and bajonet and demonstrated the shooting position of these soldiers. Zonnebeke castle by JosM The castle (in Normandic style) was constructed on the grounds of a former Augustine abbey after World War I. It was acquired by the city in 1980 and since then open for the public. It is located next tot the church of Zonnebeke (Ieperstraat 5). A walk in the park (the pond is the source of the river Zonnebeek) is a nice way to bring your mind to peace. In the 10 ha park one can follow a nature trail, giving much attention to different species of trees.
