The owners or people that were working there were quite friendly and when I asked in French if they could speak "Canadian English" or Francais they certainly chuckled and answered in English...
It was a small store front and had though plenty of seating in an adjoining area to the back of the building up a short flight of stairs...
It was clean and as it turned out had fast a friendly service...I was only looking for something light and I didn't really want to sit and eat a whole meal...
I looked and decided to try something that looked kind of good...I wasn't sure what it was though but is was on a skewer and was kind of breaded...It was called Ziguenerstick...and was quite tasty in fact...just a tad of hot spice in it....I'm not sure what the meat was...I dont think I want to know...anyhow it was tasty enough that I went back fifteen minutes later and had another... You can eat either at the small and cozy restaurant or on the terrace overlooking the garden and the pond.
Husband:
starter: cold smoked duck breast under aroma’s of truffle and old balsamico, finished with a gooze liver mousse
main: marinated porc fillet with sundried tomatoes and mozarella in a Trappist beer sauce and Italian pasta
dessert: home made chocolate mousse “black & white” accompanied by a ginger snap and an orange sensation

starter: tower of grey North Sea shrimps, tomato and egg-mimosa on a bed of herb cream

Just a short walk from the market square, we found a place serving up yummy Turkish/middle eastern food. It's a casual place where you can either get take out or sit at one of the tables in back.
We ordered chicken kebabs, stuffed with juicy flavorful chicken, cabbage, lettuce, tomato, onion and your choice of sauce artfully placed on freshly baked bread. We asked for traditional cucumber sauce and the owner lamented that Belgians just didn't care for cucumber sauce but that frequently he made that for himself. he offered to whip up a batch but we declined, opting instead for a garlic sauce for me and a chili sauce for David. The kebab was delicious and I couldn't finish my small kebab.

We ate at this restaurant on the evening before the VT meeting. It is on the Grote Markt and as it was a lovely warm sunny evening we were able to sit outside and people watch during our meal. The service was friendly and good.
We both chose an omelette, I had one with shrimp and Koos had one cheese. They were served with salad and chips. The omelettes were hot and tasty and moist. So often omelettes are cook right through and very dry bu these were just right. Of course the chips were fresh and crisp and he salad was fresh. We really enjoyec our meal. All the restaurants close to the arcades in Grote Markt were very busy, the only vacant seats were in full sun and we did not see a simple lunch menu - all rather expensive main meals.
The Cyper was just what we were looking for a simple menu, shaded pavement tables and very nice friendly service.
We had excellent cheese and ham omelettes which came with a generous salad garnish and enough chips for 6!
With 25 cl Pils and 25cl Mazout the bill came to 23 euros 70.
For about 10 minutes passing traffic was a bit noisy but we enjoyed the interesting views from our table.
Note - The interesting rooftop opposite, which we could see from our table was, before the War, the “Hotel de Chatellenie”. When rebuilding started after the War this building was completed and ready for use before either the Cloth Hall or Town Hall.
So it served as a temporary Town Hall until the Cloth Hall was complete. In the rebuilding the roof acquired the three tiered rows of dormer windows which had not been there before the War. I choose the restaurant because it serves "paling in het groen - anguilles au vert" (eel) which I like. It's difficult to find eel in the shops; they have to be sold alive and one has to cut their head and strip them of their skin just before cooking what is no fun with these slippery animals.
My wife knowing about this cruelty preferred "harmonie de coquilles St Jacques et crevettes".
Both dishes were very good. Prices 21 - 23 €. There were also mussels (jumbo quality) at 21 € for a "casserole" (= 1 Kg). Mussels are of very good quality this year!
