This was a restaurant where we stopped for a coffee break when the clouds turned into a heavy rain! Lots of places inside but also lovely outdoor seating outside looking at the central square. It was a peaceful Sunday morning, not much people around so service was quick anyway.

We ordered a coffee (2.80e) and a Dagsoep (soup of the day), it was an amazing soup with asparagus.
Au Miroir is open daily from 10.00am to midnight.

Their menu has lot of warm or cold plates but it was too early for us to try anything more than a soup.

Les Halles de Blieck: lovely omelettes

We ate at this restaurant on the evening before the VT meeting. It is on the Grote Markt and as it was a lovely warm sunny evening we were able to sit outside and people watch during our meal. The service was friendly and good.

Favorite Dish: We both chose an omelette, I had one with shrimp and Koos had one cheese. They were served with salad and chips. The omelettes were hot and tasty and moist. So often omelettes are cook right through and very dry bu these were just right. Of course the chips were fresh and crisp and he salad was fresh. We really enjoyec our meal.

Chicken kebab
1 more image

Just a short walk from the market square, we found a place serving up yummy Turkish/middle eastern food. It's a casual place where you can either get take out or sit at one of the tables in back.

Favorite Dish: We ordered chicken kebabs, stuffed with juicy flavorful chicken, cabbage, lettuce, tomato, onion and your choice of sauce artfully placed on freshly baked bread. We asked for traditional cucumber sauce and the owner lamented that Belgians just didn't care for cucumber sauce but that frequently he made that for himself. he offered to whip up a batch but we declined, opting instead for a garlic sauce for me and a chili sauce for David. The kebab was delicious and I couldn't finish my small kebab.

One small kebab, one large kebab and 2 cans of soda was 13E.

A very nice garden to have a beer, or two.
The weather wasn't that good when we were here, so almost everybody was inside in the cellar, where you can have the same delicious beers ofcourse. There is a choice of 170 beers here.

Vivaldi: Great food at the Grote Markt

mixed grill

Restaurant & Tearoom Vivaldi is located at the Grote Markt, in the heart of Ieper. We had a table outside and could enjoy the fair that was held on the Marketsquare. But Vivaldi is not too close to the noisy attractions that were there for 10 days in august.
Inside the restaurant is very modern styled, see their website for an impression.

The food was very good. The soup of the day (in this case spinach) was very tasty, a strong stock was used to make it. Tom tried the scampi with garlic, which was excellent and had so much garlic that i dipped a piece of bried in the oil to have some garlic too.......
For main course it was mixed grill (which was really enough meat) with a huge bag of the famous belgian fries. And a 'vispannetje', a dish made of tasty fish in a cheessauce. There was salmon, scampi, sole and pollack in there.

Great food and served with care, a defenite woult eat here again.

My husband's *little* dessert

The chefs of hotel-restaurant Ariane really do a wonderful job. Fresh ingredients, local products, ... delicious food.
You can eat either at the small and cozy restaurant or on the terrace overlooking the garden and the pond.

Favorite Dish: Husband:
starter: cold smoked duck breast under aroma’s of truffle and old balsamico, finished with a gooze liver mousse
main: marinated porc fillet with sundried tomatoes and mozarella in a Trappist beer sauce and Italian pasta
dessert: home made chocolate mousse “black & white” accompanied by a ginger snap and an orange sensation

Me:
starter: tower of grey North Sea shrimps, tomato and egg-mimosa on a bed of herb cream
main: A stew of fresh North Sea fish in a creamy sauce with crispy vegetable strips and parsley potatoes

In het kleine stadhuis, dinner in history

In het kleine Stadhuis - Grote Markt 28: a cosy, somewhat busy, cafe-restaurant that serves wonderful, yet simple dishes in a almost medieval atmosphere.

Den Anker - Grote Markt 30: this is the place to be to eat clams (mosselen) or any other seafood dish.

't Leetvermaak - Korte Meerstraat 2: dining in a very imposing scenery. Marijke and Stef know how to treat their guests on typical Belgian menu's, as well as some exotic food.

De Waterpoort - Brugseweg 43: outside the centre but well known with many Ieperlingen. Grilled plates are the best.

Ter Posterie - Rijselsestraat 57: here one combines drinking with deliscious food. All Belgian beers from this region are available!

Belgian beer - 170 different ones...This must be one of the best real Belgian pubs in town. The interior looks more German than Belgian but the is nevertheless cosy and they know their beers. There is also a beer garden.

various: You don't come for the food

Ieper's restaurants was nothing to write home about despite being impressed with nearby Brugge and other great Belgian food. It is as if here, they haven't bothered as they know people will come anyway. There WERE good restaurants alright but then you had to pay more than I'm used to paying in Belgium so that just a simple pasta set you back more than ten euro. This made it difficult for vegetarians and as such I can only recommend a place almost next to the Cloth Hall in Grote Markt where they had the usual cheese croquettes and a fresh salad. There are also plenty of "Tea Rooms" for British veterans and others.
