Declarations of "The finest Belgian Chocolates and the words "free sample", not to mention a growling stomach drew me into Peter de Groote and I ended up buying several different kinds to try. These ended up being some of the least expensive chocolates that I would try and also my favorites, especially the white chocolate creme fraiche. Very simple, no nuts, no added layers of anything, just chocolate and fresh cream, delicious!
I should have gone back and bought some more but since we were traveling by car, I had planned to stock up in Brussels right before we returned home. I never did find another Peter de Groote store since the only location is in Ypres and although I came close, I didn't find any that I liked as well as these.

I never went inside, but this shop, very close to the great market is an eye-catcher in the shopping streets of Ieper.
Another popular shop is on the marketplace itself - Belgian chocolates of course.

The shop offers more goodies beyond chocolates; salt and sour, bitter and sweet, everything West Flanders offers is in stock.
So have a look at the home-made ice cream, waffles, pralines, sweets, Belgian Trappists and local Beers, genevas, wine, biscuits, pâté's, jelly, oil, vinegar & mustard, coffee & tea. Puydtjes' Charcuterie is a kind a bucher shop with fine paté's, kummelworst, gevulde ovenkoeken and more run by Pascal Depuydt.
I even saw some bee paté.
The shop is in a lovely building with curved galls shopping windows in an Art Deco style.

We found these hand crafted beer bottles made out of chocolate very funny.
Both chocolate and beer are Belgian specialities, so why not buy two in one?
Nice present to take home!
