Handing-over of command at the Logistic Bn.

By chance this 30/09/2009 (it was not announced by the tourist bureau) we assisted on the Grote Markt opposite the Lakenhallen at a military ceremony consisting of the handing-over of command at the Logistic Battalion quartered at Ieper/Ypres.
This battalion whose soldiers wear an azure blue beret is today called CCMP following the passage of a Minister of Defense who did not like traditional military names (thus the Belgian Land Forces became the “Terrestrial Component”).

At the military parade which lasted more than one hour were present delegations and flags of other countries. The music band was that of the Guides (former cavalry regiment), the best Belgian military music.
My photo shows the troops falling into line along the Lakenhallen. In the foreground the flag of the Royal British Legion as well as the French flag.

The lonely piper at the Lakenhallen.

The handing-over of command, on 30/09/2009, at the Logistic Battalion quartered in Ieper/Ypres was honoured by the presence of a Scottish piper. I am unaware of to which unit he belongs but his performance was perfect and particularly moving in this place where so many British and Commonwealth soldiers lost their life for the freedom of my country.
I hope that my video, not very skilful, can pay homage to them through this so poignant music.

by breughel Updated Apr 4, 2011

The Royal music of the Guides (cavalry) was present, on 30/09/2009, at the handing-over of command at the Logistic Battalion quartered in Ieper/Ypres.
The Royal Music of the Guides includes a harmony orchestra, composed of 84 selected musicians and of 22 Bugles.
It was made up in 1832 at the request of the King Leopold I and attached to the horse's escort of the Belgian sovereign, escorts ensured by the First Regiment of the Guides.

The regiments of the Guides after WW II changed from horses to tanks. They were dissolved by episodes between 2002 and 2006. The Royal Music of the Guides remained and carries the black beret of the armoured forces with the red wine-colour badge.

At the military parades the band of the Guides plays the march of the Royal Military Academy which is one of the best military marches that I know.
My video shows the passage of the music under the arches of the town hall of Ypres which prolongs the Cloth Hal.

Armistice Day Ceremony at the Menin Gate

by hgermer Written Dec 17, 2007

Unlike the nightly last post the Armistice Day ceremony is more than just the playing of the last post. We brought our puppy along with us, so we opted to stay up on the hill instead of trying to get a spot where we could see most of the ceremony. (But if you stand up near the rampart walls you get a great view of the parade next to the moat)
It started off with the Poppy Parade from the Cloth Hall in the Grote Markt to the Menen Gate Memorial, included the Last Post and a moment of silence, prayers in English and Flemish, and laying of the wreaths. At one point in the ceremony thousands of red petals were released into the wind, it made the most spectacular scene from where we were standing up top the monument. The whole ceremony was about an hour and a half in length, but very nicely done. Although we were not standing closer too see everything, we had no problem hearing the ceremony. If you are in Ieper on Armistice day, and attend a ceremony at one of the cemetery's instead you still have the chance to see the nightly playing of the Last Post at the Menen Gate at 8pm.

    Kattenstoet or Cat Festival

by Kettleman Written Feb 9, 2005

Phew! At least they don't throw live cats off the towers any more. My two can rest assured as they lie in their beds that they are safe.

Nowadays the event is held every three years (I think) and the next one is planned for May 2006. Traditionally it is the 2nd weekend.

If you want to stay in the town for the weekend, it is important to book very early, or arrive very early!

I booked my hotel in the Market Square last year.... it's Feb 2005 now!
