If You Need An Internet Connection

Tracks and Travellers is a cracking little pub immediately opposite the railway station. As well as being a friendly locals bar they also offer WiFi and a couple of PC's for customers use. I didn't notice whether there were any charges as I didn't need to use it myself but I'm sure it'll be relatively cheap even if they do.

When you arrive by Kusttram or train you'll immediately note the impressive church across the road. This is the Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Margaret Church which is the town's main Catholic place of worship.

The original building dates from the 14th century and was substantially expanded in 1852 to 53 and then almost completely rebuilt in 1955 to 58 by the well-known church architect Josef Ritzen.

    Arty Knokke

Even though I only had the briefest of visits this time round I got the immediate impression that Knokke is quite an arty, creative, community. There's public artworks, modern and classical, dotted all over the place and during the summer there's a "Sculpture Link" festival of works along the seafront.

There are also many private art galleries, aimed both at the casual tourist and some rather upmarket places for the more discerning collectors. In fact doing some research for this page I find that the local tourist office website proudly announces that there are 67 private galleries in the town's 2 square kilometres.

In August the town hosts an International Art and Antiques Festival with dozens of exhibitors.

Main picture here is "Knokke Men" created in 2000 by the famous Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout (website below).

    The Local Tourist Office

The Toerisme Knokke-Heist office is located on the seafront at Zeedijk 660. Here you can get pretty much al the information you need, as well as assistance with accommodation, event tickets and public transport timetables. They have the usual freebie leaflets as well as guidebooks and souvenirs for sale.

It wasn't open on the evening of my visit (March 2013) but during the summer it's open from 8.30 am until 6 pm, seven days a week.

    Finding Your Way Around

Most of Knokke's attraction is for its seafront but it still quite an interesting pace just to wander. The Kusstram terminus and the railway station are about a kilometre (maybe more) from the beaches but are connected by the main shopping street, Lippenslaan. You'll find strategically-located, and easy to read, street maps all over the place and the one pictured is on the railway station forecourt.

You'll also find a map on the tourist office website below:
