Het Vlinderhof is the tearoom/restaurant next to De Vlindertuin (Butterfly Garden) in Knokke-Heist.
It's a nice place, with a lovely outside terrace. Guests are welcome for lunch or dinner but also for a beer or afternoon coffee.
Exceptional location: surrounded by the lovely Koningsbos and the Knokke dunes, and alongside the belt of greenery that surrounds the natural reserve of the Zwin.
Favorite Dish: We just had afternoon coffee here but this is a place we will return to for lunch or dinner sometimes.
Update 10/05/2008: ... which we did! Dinner, that is.
Francisca Fincent, or better known as "Moeder (mother) Siska" was a miller's wife who was well known in the neighbourhood for her famous waffles. She had 12 children and they all learned how to make the famous waffles. Some of them started their own business.
There are still Siska descendants in Knokke, operating a restaurant/hotel and they still have the best waffles in Belgium.
On the Zoutelaan are two Siska's (Gustave and Marie). The restaurants have playgrounds for the children and a big garden to sit outside during beautiful weather.
Favorite Dish: Waffles in five-hearts shape.
Very good Italian restaurant in the centre of busy Knokke. Fairly large and therefore sometimes a bit noisy. But the food is very good and that's what is important after all.
The restaurant is open for lunch, for dinner but also in the afternoon for gelato or pasticceria.
Favorite Dish: They have pizza, pasta, fish, meat, ... There is even a special carpaccio menu! If you want it more luxury, you can order lobster from their aquarium.
The choice on their menu is really HUGE! Makes me want to go back!
It's one of the best restaurants I have ever been to.
There is no other restaurant where the interior is so elegant yet warm and homely and the dishes look so sofisticated and taste so heavenly.
Favorite Dish: I tried and I loved:
Kiche with vegetables
Fish with courgette and rise with olives
There are excellent cookies (butter, almond and others) and a real thick mousse of belgian chocalate that come with tea or coffee.
The cook regulary goes for a training to Provance and he speaks French while at work.
Shrimp croquette: this is my favourite snack when I am in Knokke-Heist. In most of the places they are fresh and home-made. It's a good snack for lunch or as an appetizer in the restaurants.
The meal come with two croquettes filled with Northsea shrimps, served with fresh vegetables and some bread or Belgian fries. You can also combine one shrimp and one cheese croquette or for the veggies: two cheese croquettes.
French: croquette de crevettes
The first place we came to on the seafront after meeting up - and of course the first thing you do when you meet up is to go and have a drink. This was a nice location, just off the beach, so we could watch to see when the ships started to sail out.
Favorite Dish: Beer!
The seafront terrace of the Hotel Bristol looked very temting, and so did the pancakes everyone else was having. So we had pancakes too. And the others laughed at me cos I had beer with my pancakes - in this case a Duvel.
Favorite Dish: Pancakes with chocolate sauce, and a Duvel.
Here's a close-up pic of very delicious Belgian pancakes. They are served with sugar, jam, all kinds of fruit, chocolate or icecream.
A must to try when in Belgium!
