DE BROEL TORENS - These towers...
Favorite thing: DE BROEL TORENS - These towers date back to the Middle Ages. They are the oldest remaining parts of the city fortifications. The southern tower, called 'Speyetoren' (12th century), was part of the ramparts of the Castle. The northern tower, called 'Inghelborchtoren', was especially built for the defence by means of primitive artillery. On the bridge, there is the statue of Saint Nepomucenus, patron saint of the drowned people. We cross the bridge and go to the left. Now, we are walking along the Broelkaai.
Next to the official...
Favorite thing: Next to the official sightseeing (www.kortrijk.be) you should taste the local beers and 'gin' (jenever) St.Pol. Visit the beer cellar under the town hall.
Fondest memory: Strolling along the river Leie and going back in history. Visit the Groeninge museum with a copy of the Venus of Kortrijk.( original in Mariemont, Hainaut)
visit St.-Amand's college,...
Favorite thing: visit St.-Amand's college, High School. Has a language exchange with Claires Court School in Maidenhead in the U.K.
Fondest memory: Flax and lace museum near the university, Kulak. An illustration of the rich history of the region and the town. Annex is a historical pub.
Favorite thing: visit the Onze-Lieve-vrouwekerk (Our Lady's Church) in Kortrijk.
You certainly have to take a look at 'The raising of the Cross', painted by Antoon Van Dyck and the Albaster statue of St. Catherine (in the Grafkapel)
Fondest memory: During our visit at the church, we met the priest. He was so kind to tell us all about the history of the church;
Gave us some explanation about the beautiful mosaic windows, the Golden Spurs hanging at the top of the ceiling, the portraits of the Flemish counts in the Grafkapel. It was really interesting.
Thanks very much.
