Kortrijk Things to Do

  • "De Leeuw van Vlaanderen" by H....

Kortrijk 1302 museum would probably not exist if Hendrik Conscience had not written in 1838 the historic novel "De Leeuw van Vlaanderen" ("The Lion of Flanders") exalting the national feeling and pride of Flemish people under the tyranny (the flemish word "dwingeland" is often used in the book) of king of France Philippe IV le Bel (1268-1314).The...

  • Flemish Beguinages.

The Begijnhof - Béguinage of Kortrijk is one of the 26 Flemish Béguinages on the UNESCO List of World Heritage. Most Flemish towns have one, sometimes two, Begijnhoven-Béguinages. They are architectural ensembles in specific Flemish style composed of houses, churches, ancillary buildings and green spaces in which lived Begijnen-Béguines. They were...

  • Golden spurs are replicas.

Several hundreds of golden spurs belonging to French knights who lost life at the battle of the Groeningekouter in 1302 were hung at the vault of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw church. Not for long, in 1382 French mercenaries who had defeated the militias of Gent at the battle of Westrozebeke plundered the church and stole the golden spurs. Those we see now...

  • Kortrijk - The City hall

Kortrijk - The City hall It's a mixt of styles: We find here some éléments of late Gothic ad with renaissances touches. In fact it's transition style. In the first pic you find the BELFRY, the only remaining part of the Cloth-Hall. The statue on top is Mercurius the god of trade, placed there in the 18th century. There is also a war memorial attached. The second picture shows a fountain, no special reason, just liked the flowing curves. The last picture show a plaque we found on a wall, have no...

  • Some tea and sympathy

An appealing place near all the shops. Recently taken over by a sympathetic young lady who does a good job with teas and light lunch items. Sandwiches and exotic teas.*WARNING: the unusual, orange substance to the right of my tea looked like sorbet but was a spicy shock to my mild system!

The restaurant is at the main square of Kortrijk. The staff is very helpful and speaking good English. I ate a steak with mashroom souce which was perfect. Also dont forget to taste Westmalle beer..Its little bit strong :) Dont drink too much because you ma not find your hotel way. :) You can find the pic of bottle in next pic. The alcohol volume...

The Schouwburg or better "Cultuur Centrum Kortrijk" is the local theater.

The theater was build between 1912 and 1920 in a Flamish post-Renaissance style and was designed by architect Jan Robert Vanhoenacker.

The main theather can house 800 visitors. There are smaller halls in the building, like the ballet hall, the arenatheater and the basement galery.

In 1968 the building was remodelled, distorting the original character of the building. Luckely this was restored by the 2000 restauration. At the same time the Alberola glass roof was added.

  • Train FYI & Lockers at Kortrijk Station

There is a small bank of lockers at the Kortrijk station. The charge is 3.50 Euros. Not sure if you can access 24 hours or leave overnite. You must have EXACT change since they do not accept credit cards and no change back is given. This was very handy as I stowed my stuff, walked around for a few hours and went on to Brussels. Kortrijk Local Customs

  • Crocodile Pharmacy.

It is well known that Belgium is the capital of surrealism not only in art but also in politics and even daily life. Nevertheless a drugstore called "Crocodile" is not so common. As the place was closed I couldn't ask the origin of the name.

  • Westvletern Trappist Beer

The Kortrijk tourist info center is well-designed but not much enthusiasm from the staff. Very perfuctory. Map and a few hand gestures and that's about it! I even lost my own enthusiasm to visit the Flax Museum which is a bit out of the center city (take bus 13 at the rail station). The center is located in the Bejinhofpark.

  • The Broel towers

Although they look identical, the towers were not built at the same time. The Southern tower, also known as the Speyetoren, was built in 1385 to control the traffic on the river Lys. This tower was part of the fortified fence of the first medieval castle of the Counts of Flanders. The Speyentoren was also part of the 12th century rampart, destroyed...
