To take a walk alongside the dyke !

To take a walk alongside the dyke

We left on the extremity of the dyke. On the way works of artists brightened the trip.

There was not too much folk, also the walk was well pleasant. The sailing ships leaving marina harbour as well as the birds looking for food on the sand benches were as much points of animation on the way.

    King Albert I Monument

With in the structure center statue of king-knight Albert I (work of Karel Aubroeck, 1938), this complex together symbolizes the "goose paw" estuary of the Yser.

In fact, the plains of the rear country were flooded during a big party of the first war thanks to the courage of 2 custodians of sluices. They had inverted the process of discharges of the waters towards the sea, creating thus an internal sea in less than a single night!

To the monument summit a gallery of hundred meters long does the turn and is equipped with orientation tables .

To the structure bottom a (other) monument recalls the sacrifice of British soldiers of which the names are engraved. Rock Lions lying bring up the guard of every sides.
