    SeaSens

by tweetycaro Updated Mar 12, 2004

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

SeaSens takes you on a discovery journey...
The place to be is the IMKE C, a beautifully restored freight ship which has its permanent basis in Ostend.
You can leave your seasickness pills at home, because it all happens while the ship is lying by the quaside in the lighthouse dock.
Take your seat in an electronically operated relaxing chair. Float away on a mixture of sounds of music, in which a high-tech sound installation as well as the ship engine of the IMKE C take part. Open your eyes and your mind to the light- and lasershow. Take a deep breath and experience the subtle aroma of pure and natural ethereal oils. After the relaxation session, you can taste our "flavour of the season", a carefully selected drink.

    Catch your own fish !!!

by tweetycaro Written Mar 12, 2004

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Catch your very own shrimp at sea. You can, on the Crangon, a fully traditionally equipped shrimp trawler.
The technique used to catch the shrimp is board fishing. This technique involves the use of 'side trawlers': nets that have otter boards on the side.
These boards or metal plates keep the net spread open as it moves through the water. It is a trap from which the shrimp cannot escape.

The Crangon departs from a spot near the famous Oostende lighthouse and takes you on a magical trip along the Flemish coastline. On board you get 'hands-on' experience of the traditional way in which Flemish fishermen catch, sort wash and... cook sea shrimp at sea.

It is hard work, but... well worth it. Not only is this a unique opportunity to become one with nature, but helpers are allowed to take home part of the catch free of charge.

A trip on the Crangon takes about three hours.

    Bredene

Bredene is known for two things: it is the main camping city of the Belgian coast and it has also the only nudist beach of whole Belgium.
Another thing about it is that it also the only coastal city without a dyke. Via a tunnel and a small walking path, you arrive directly into the dunes and the beach
Bredene is only 5 km away from Oostende.

    Stene Dorp

by Vincedem Written May 12, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When you visit Oostende I think "Stene Dorp" is something you HAVE to see. Why? Because it´s so authentic and so different then the rest of the city!

Stene Dorp is like a small village in the outskirts of Oostende with all small white pitoresque houses and charming church. It´s the perfect place to go to on a sunny day and to visit one of the restaurants there for some nice food or to drink a trappist!

You can easily get there from the station by taking bus number 6 called "Stene Dorp". The ride should take about 20 minutes.

    EUROPA BUILDING.
This building (100m high)is the highest along the European coast.
On the 43th floor there is a café,which offers you next to a drink or a snack a panoramic view.
An ultra quick lift brings you to the 34th floor in just a few seconds.
When the weather is clear, you can see Bruges.

    Paul Delvaux museum

by bonio Written Oct 1, 2008

OK it's not in Ostende but a short tram or raod trip to St Idesbald. Follow the signs from the tram stop.
First noticed the work of this artist in the cafe on Bruges railway station, a little research took us to this museum.
Interesting and well laid out museum, good access for the disabled too.
On show many of his paintings, mostly surreal and nudity, but with a few railway scenes around as well.
Information on each picture in Flemmish, French, German and English.
There is a busy cafe and, of course, a souvenir shop.

    Cook Shrimps

by singel Written Apr 4, 2004

In summertime, it's possible to go to sea on a boat with a real fisherman to catch shrimps and to learn to cook them.
What tastes better than your own catch?
As soon as I find the adress again, I'll note it here.

    Boat and Tram

by singel Written Apr 4, 2004

From the beginning of spring till end of summer, you can take the tram to Nieuwpoort (some 15 km away) and then board the boat 'The Seastar' for the trip back along the coastline, with one special ticket. Sometimes they even organise a barbecue at sea.

I have no idea what this is, but I like the dichotomy of the tower and the pavilion. If you recognize these buildings, please let me know. :-)
