Toscane : real Italian traiteur/resto & fair price

by Innovator Updated Aug 3, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Originally this started as a take-away traiteur store, but due to the big succes (best price/quaility) and original Italian recipes the 2 Italian cooks have expanded their place to a restaurant and are planning a terrace also for in summer.

In the restaurant you can see the cooks prepare the pizza's in their authentic oven. Great for a take-away but also if you want to eat quality food with fresh recipes for a fair price.

Favorite Dish: Try the Lasagna Napoli or Vegetarian.
Also the pizza 'speciale' is fine, but the Moussaka is the best, although no Italian stuff.

    The box

From De Panne till Knokke, Belgian coast "überhaupt", you will find excellent fresh seafood restaurants.

Favorite Dish: Next to the famous and delicious "Moules&Frites" - spoiled with a famous Belgian beer or a splendid French white wine/South Africa Stellenbosch - just try it to get convinced

Stalls on the Visserskaai: Seafood in abundance

by KennetRose Written Sep 26, 2002

    Fish stall on the Visserskaai

Who cares if the hotel doesn't offer breakfast? From early in the morning, a long line of stalls is set up along the quayside, selling fresh and dried fish, trays of crabmeat, shellfish and shrimps, and bowls of steaming wollekes - whelks, that old standby of the English seaside! There's no other way to take breakfast in Oostende!

Favorite Dish: The wollekes hit the spot nicely

    The nectar of the gods!

Quiet local restaurant on the Visserskaai, perhaps not the best or cheapest in town but it's the one I found and it was plenty good enough for the occasion. The service was friendly and efficient and the bill came to € 18.00.

Favorite Dish: Mussels, of course, in a big pan of white wine and vegetables. Washed down with a Duvel or two.

This is a very popular place were you can eat very good for 'okay prices'... You can find mainly local people here but because it's very good location you also see tourists there! I think this place is specialised in pasta, but you can eat much more here and everything is fresh (and I can know cos a good mate of me works in the kitchen :) ).

When you wouldn't feel hungry... it's also a nice place to have a drink!

A very relaxed atmosphere in this grill house, where the grill is IN the restaurant with the boss behind it.
Check their site to see if there isn't a live gig, then you have to pay entry fee.
The grill is open till 2am.

Favorite Dish: Everything on the grill !!

De Lange Muur (The Long Wall): DE LANGE MUUR - The best Chinese in our city !

by Innovator Updated May 30, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant is 100% chinese, the staff, the menus,everything..

It is also very clean and you have the greatest view of ostend over the harbour with Yachts and the Mercator.

This restaurant looks very luxury, but isn't so expensive as you might think...

Great fresh chinese food, also take-away.
Definitely the best Chinese in Ostend town!

Favorite Dish: Vogelnestje 'De Lange Muur'

(plate made like a bird nest , filled with chicken, big scampis and other seafood, veal, peppers, nuts, onions, gong boa sauce)

So mixed meat with a great taste and great sauce...our favourite plate!

The only thing that you have to have is some patience because it is always well crowded (or you have to come early).

You can eat tagliatelli's, pizzas, lasagnas and also steak-frites,...wide choice.
Don't forget to watch the board with the suggestion of the day.

Vispannetje with french fries is very good, also the Lasagna (vegeterian or Bolognese) are great.

It is not a real restaurant, nor a café,it's called a 'taverne' here in Belgium. It's a sort of between restaurant and café.

Everybody used to be satified, but now there are rumors, and some friends also experienced less quality (like Garnaalkroketten not filled! and less taste in the food in general)

Favorite Dish: The tagliatelli Funghi or Seafood are my favorites...large plates well garnished with lots of mushrooms & fresh parmezan (Funghi) or if you take the Seafood tagliatelli, it is well garnished with seashells, and other great seafood.

Also a new discovery is the Scampi 'Zeezotje'. A plate with delicious scampi's in a superb spicey sauce with spicy french fries! Try it,it's great!!!

You can find all kinds of dishes here: mussels, shrimp croquettes, brochettes, pasta, ...: all very well prepared in large portions.
The service is polite and friendly. The restaurant has a nice interior, especially the upper part.

Favorite Dish: I had mussels, which cost +/- 15,50 euro.

Caruso: Morning Coffee And Much More!

For a perfect example of one of Oostende's sumptuous Continental pattiserie/bakeries Caruso is well worth searching out. The window display of cakes and confectionery will tempt even the most savoury-toothed and once entered the aromas of fresh-baked bread and brewing coffee will have an amnesiac effect on those who have already had breakfast.

Unfortunately I only had time for a quick coffee but was suitably impressed by this place. Staff are friendly and welcoming (even though it was just a coffee) and the general ambience has the refined laid-backness you'd expect from one of its Viennoise contemporaries but none of the stuffiness you can sometimes encounter in Paris.

Not just for sit-down meals though as the bakery seemed popular with the locals for their daily bread and the impressive chocolates on display look ideal for your Belgian souvenirs without being hugely expensive.

The Seafood Stalls At The Harbour: See Food And Eat It!!

by johngayton Written Oct 10, 2012

    See Food...
    3 more images

This is of course the rejoinder to the "I'm on a seafood diet..." and sums up my impression of this little row of stalls along the harbour-side. Yep, it just has to be done when the weather permits.

I blessed with a marvellously sunny October day during my visit this time and sitting on the harbour wall with a seafood cocktail for lunch was almost compulsory. There's about four or five of these stalls here and they're all pretty much of a oneness with their attractively presented arrays of fish and shellfish. You can buy pre-made trays or select your own combinations, along with whatever sauces and accompaniments you fancy and they also have hot pots of whelks and cockles. Service is friendly, multi-lingual, and prices can be as cheap as you want with individual portions starting at 2 Euros.

Favorite Dish: I chose one of the mid-price trays at 4 Euros which was a substantial portion of prawns, some reformed bits made to look like lobster, and some flaked faux-crab all smothered in cocktail sauce. Tasty enough though and ideal for a light lunch with the sea air for company.

    Spring Rolls
    3 more images

After an afternoon and early evening of following the sun around the various terraces of the town's bars an attack of the munchies had me suddenly getting the urge for something spicy and then on the corner was this little Chinese restaurant.

Unfortunately it wasn't very busy, in fact it wasn't busy at all - there was only one other table occupied whilst I was there. But it was pleasant enough - the usual Chinese restaurant decor. Service was friendly, if a little shy, the food was good and the bill more than reasonable.

Favorite Dish: I had the Crab Spring Rolls to start which were tasty and cooked in a very clean oil, the accompanying dip needed a bit of a kick which the jar of chilli sauce on the table condiments provided more than adequately.

A sizzling platter of Cantonese Duck was a huge portion of meat with a good crispy, nicely seasoned, skin and the plain rice just that.

Not the best Chinese I've had but no complaints whatsoever. Washed down with a bottle of Tsing Tao beer my final bill was less than 20 Euros.
