    Fishermen's quay - 'De Trap '

    by budapest8 Written Feb 12, 2009

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When you visit Ostend you must visit the Fishermen’s Quay.
This is on the way to the fish market.
In the morning you can attend the homecoming of the shrimping boats.
This is the best place to go to if you want to learn the dialect of Ostend
.. The most delicious shrimps and many other kinds of fish are
offered for sale in typical fish stands. Along the quay many
    stands sell lots of seafood.

A visit to the friendly and helpful Touisme Oostende office, close to the casino, would be a good place to start a visit to Oostende.
They will book a hotel room for you and have maps of the city as well as loads of useful information.
Helped us a great deal arriving in town with no hotel booked.

    30 Jul - 8 Aug : Theatre @ Sea - great event

by Innovator Updated Jul 19, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Don't miss the opening night! The theater itself starts 2 days before the official opening night in various theaters and pubs.

The opening night is the first weekend (this year Saturday 29th July 23hrs - 0hrs at the station square). It's a breathtaking spectacle of 1 hour in open air (free) with futuristic acts on the square.

Malaya is a dreamworld with big birds, a big floating airbaloon with a woman in white costume that sings over the audience high in the air, stiltwalkers fight each other with weapons and fire. Great futuristic beings. The spectacle is impressive due to the interaction of light, sound, the story and the public. The spectacle is a battle in a mythical dreamworld of big statues, fire, light and sound.

You can describe it as science-fiction theatre, they march through the big audience on stilts, dressed as some sort of robots, with some princesses in great costumes.

They set some things on fire and walk close through the audience with torches and lightguns, some special metal scafolds, and they perform a science fiction-like story.

The music is great, the square is with 4 surroundspeakers, which makes the public feel they are part of the spectacle, you hear the futuristic robots speak a foreign language to make it more exiting with the fire. Not for small kids, they may be frightned!

SPEKTAKEL CLOSE-ACT / WHITE WINGS on the station square (half hour)
And at 23hrs starts the big fireworks on our small beach, to close the Theater Aan Zee spectacle officially.

So the theaterfestival is for 9 days, acts everywhere, on the beach, through the shopping streets in the centre, in pubs and theaters and on big squares.

Some acts are for free, some are to be paid (+-€6) and fast sold out, but make sure you don't miss the opening or closing spectacle in open air, it's really great!! See the 4 other pictures! For the whole program see www.theateraanzee.be

You can start playing once you have mastered the basic rules. For this you receive six beginners’ chips. This tells the croupiers and your fellow players that you could do with a bit of extra help. Beginner’s formula with six chips plus cocktail: 14,00 euro per person."

If you get to Oostende by train this will definitely be the 1st building you'll see. But don't just pass, stop for a while and admire its architectural beauty.

The building was constructed between 1910 and 1913.
