Oostende's main square is the Wapenplein and it's located about halfway down the main shopping street, Kapellstraat. While it's not exactly a masterpiece, the square is large and pleasantly surrounded by cafes and restaurants. On the south side of the square is the enormous Feest-en-Kultuurpaleis (Festival and Culture Hall), which contains the town's main art museum, the Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Fine Arts Museum). I didn't visit the museum, but the collection includes some interested pieces by surrealist Paul Delvaux, whose work I enjoyed seeing in Brussels.

    a kiosk

A few minutes from the railway station, in the very heart of the town, there's this main square. You can see a lot of people here, walking or sitting in the surrounding numerous cafés and restaurants.

In the middle of the square you can see a lovely kiosk and people selling flowers round it.

The Wapenplein is Oostende's main square. Like the rest of the town it had to be rebuilt after the second world war and so it can't compete with the main squares of many other Flemish towns with their medieval architecture. But that doesn't mean that the Wapenplein is an unpleasant place by any means. For a post WW2 rebuild it's actually quite nice and it dominates by the 1958 Bell tower which replaces that destroyed in the war. On a warm day the cafés and restaurants spill out onto the square and it has a friendly and lively feel to it.
