Café Den Hertog: Before taking breath of fresh air

    Café Den Hertog

Located a little away from main roads, 7 km from Poperinge but near the "Lijssenthoek Cemetery." It is a quiet place, or it is good to pause.

In a small house flanked by a large terrace surrounded by greenery. The owner, great traveler himself, can help you learn about the region.

The hotel is very old. During the Great War (WWI) it was regularly closed because of brawls between drunken soldiers or for not respecting the opening hours.

Favorite Dish: The dishes are tasty and served hot. The portions are generous.
I enjoyed a covered with crispy cheese lasagna passed in the oven .

Ask the ham rolls stuffed with chicory (Witloof) is typically Belgian.
Or taste hochepot (Hutsepot) kind of stew mixture of potatoes and different vegetables usually served with sausage.

    Amfora: Some great local dishes

by Museeuw Written Dec 29, 2007

We only came here once, but we want to try more dishes from the menu next time we're in Poperinge. They have some dishes that are very typical for the area, and the one I had, poached cod with a light beer sauce, was delicious. My wife had another kind of fish, and it was also very good.
The restaurant is not big, but that makes it pleasant and the setting, an 'orangerie', was nice . They have a garden though, so in the summer there's more space probably. After our dinner we went to sit in the bar in front of the building and had another drink.
The people working there are really friendly.
