Arc de Triomph in Roeselare

Favorite thing: Fata Morgana is a television show on the Flemish television (VRT).

During the summer period, each week a village or city is challenged by a Well-known Flemish person to fulfil 5 missions.

So the last week of June the Fata Morgana team landed in Roeselare.

The 5 missions were all about the Tour de France theme:

- wax the legs of 500 men

- Dress up more then 5000 people with a polka dots jersey (best climber jersey)

- 10 cyclists must return from the top of the Mont Ventoux in France and must arrive in Roeselare during the show

- Decorate a track of 1000 m (1 km) in red, white and blue

- build a scale model (1:4) of the Arc de Triomph (Paris)

4 out of the 5 missions were completed, only the Arc de Triomph was not completely finished.

Like this Roeselare got the title of a 4-Star city.

But now the week after the show they still completed the Arc de Triomph, and it really looks nice. It stays at the Botermarkt till after the festivities of July 11th.

Fondest memory: Great atmosphere at the Grote Markt

the blue line of Roeselare

Favorite thing: Walking through Roeselare you will encounter a mysterious blue line everywhere.
We asked people on the street but nobody seemed to know about it. Filip told us it was a big picture of a cyclist, which could be seen from the air. But did we believe it........
Tom wanted to, but Gonnie was very very sceptic. When we got home Filips father told us it was a link to all the places Jean-Pierre Monseré visited in his life.
Jean-Pierre Monseré was a cyclist from Roeselare who died in an accident while riding a race. He was only 22. At that time he already was world champion.
This idea was good, but we didn't believe it as the line was entering the cityhall somewhere in the middle, instead of at the door. And it came out the wall of a convent.......
Filip later contacted the local newspaper, and we have to admit: he was right !!
30 years after his accident there was a Jean-Pierre Monseré year and in honor of that they painted this blue bicycle on the streets.

Alfred Rodenbach, Roeselare

Favorite thing: Albrecht Rodenbach was one of the famous Roeselare inhabitants.

Statue at De Coninckplein, made by Jules Lagae and in 1909 unveiled at a three day Flemish party.

At 28 juli 1875 there was a student protest "de Groote Stooringe" , it was a protest against the use of french in education. Albrecht Rodenbach was one of the leaders of the protest. Students refused to sing french siongs at the year party at school, but sang "Nu het lied der Vlaamse zonen" (the song of the flemish sons) by Rodenbach. The famous "Vliegt de blauwvoet, storm op zee" (when the bluefooth flies, there is storm at sea) was the battleline.
Rodenbach promoted the Flemish language and founded student unions. He was also a writer of poetry, prose and theatre.
He died at the young age of 24 and became even more famous as a studentleader.

city shield Roeselare

Favorite thing: The cityshield in the pavement in front of cityhall. This shield was already in the oldest known seal of Roeselare, dating back to 1309.
The shield of the count of Roeselare was a silver cross at a black background, and is said to come from the patriarchs of the eastern church. The city adopted this shield, before the french revolution it became a double black cross at a silver background.
