For many years this big bas-relief of Saint - Georges (St Joris) fighting the dragon could be seen from the street side.
But a few years ago, due to renovations at the brewery, the old building was demolished; luckily the big St - Georges picture was saved.
And it was replaced at the outer wall of the new laboratory building. Which was not an easy job as the weight of this bas relies is about 20 tons.
St Joris (St Georges) is the Patron Saint of the Brewery.

In 1820 Alexander Rodenbach took over a small brewery, which was bought by Pedro Rodenbach in 1836.
The malt kiln, which dates from 1872, is made after an English model; nowadays this malt kiln is used as exposition hall.
In the cellars there are 294 oak-wooden barrels (foeders in Flemish – there is not really a correct translation for this word, it comes from the French word foudre). (Thank you, Nancy V. from the Rodenbach Brewery Visitors Centre for this information)
At the picture you can see the former entry gate to the Rodenbach Brewery, and in the rear you can see a small part of the St George (St Joris) picture.

This beautiful City Hall was built in 1769 - 1771, and it is a perfect example the 18 th century building style - well in fact it was built in the Louis XV-style.
The new wing is built later on (1925) and is inspired on the medieval City Hall with a belfry tower.
This picture was made on Sunday 3rd of April, and it is pretty unusual to see an empty Grote Markt, but that day there was a Porsche happening (The cars started at the Grote Markt and came back late in the afternoon).

A few years ago this central market square was completely renovated. And while rebuilding the market they cleared the remains of the former City Hall and the Belfry, which where located in the middle of the Grote markt (till 1704).
Of course this is (was of great historical importance, but they had to cover these archeological remains again. But then they decide to draw the ground plan of this former
building into the cobbles stones that cover the parking place.
So when you are lucky that there aren't many cars parked on the Grote Markt, you can see
this design. (But I can tell you that you need lots of luck to see it . . .)
Sunday 2nd of May, I passed at the Grote Markt, and . . . it was completely empty, so it was the ideal occasion to make a picture (it was empty because of a Porsche happening, which started and ended at the Grote Markt). The insert shows the remembrance plate which says : Here stood the City Hall - 13th - 18th century - excavation 1979.

The Malt kiln which dates from 1872, is an impressive example of industrial archaeology.
This malt kiln is decorated with mouse teeth decorations and Lombard’s arches.
The height is 24 metres and it is built after an English model, which can be seen from the round shape of the floor plan and the cone shape of the roof.
This malt kiln is restored in 1986.
