Good Beer Guide by Tim Webb is ESSENTIAL.If you live in the UK you can buy it (and afford it, bloody pound!) from bookstores but others must order it at: http://www.camra.org.uk/. CAMRA is the Campaign for Real Ale, a great organization committed to preserving traditional beer.

    break? `-)

Make sure you have some coins with you, whether it is to use the toilet somewhere (they ask normally around 30 Eurocent), whether it is for a parking meter or for a quick "sweet" from one of the many automats in the railway and metro stations.

Don't end up like my dear friends Gonnie and Tom (Tompt) here, needing a break without any coins! Desperate situation `-)

    Note of the author
You still can survive absence of the snack, you might survive the penalty fee for not paying at the parking meter... but I don't know about the third option `-)
that could be really desperate !

It rains a lot in winter.. sometimes in summer too, but the sky is often gray... the sun shines per period.. it is funny.. in can be sunny and 2 min after rain and they sun again after 5 min. You can see that everyone has an ombrella in their bag in case of... That's not a bad idea after all.

It might seem like an obvious thought, but apparently not to all who visit here. If you bring your own camera and take your own photos then you have the complete and total ability to, oh I don't know, POST YOUR OWN WORK ONLINE. Imagine, not having to pilfer others' work, it's a wild concept but a good one. Live with it. Or be electrocuted. ;-}}} This premise goes for other global locations as well.

For walking around city: city (=small) backpack to have free hands for... taking pics/movie.

Depends on weather/season but always good walking shoes or boots and rain coat (or less comfortable umbrella).

    Check the climate in Brussels:
    World Climate

Check the weather (5-day forecast for Brussels) just before you go:
    Yahoo weather
    CNN weather
    BBC weather
    or even 10-day forecast:
    The Weather Channel

For pictures at night and bad light (interiors) take a tripod.

Buy good map of Brussels (detailed with one-way street marked if you drive a car).

I would recomend to bring a good camera, reflex and digital because you going to take a lot of pictures. As for me, developing the film rolls from the reflex cost so much money for the amount of pictures I take!
Bring zoom lenses and tripods with you.
If you go on walking, a small digital might be handy (weight weight!)

  • Brussels shares a similar climate to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. So pack an umbrella and a warm jacket or sweater, especially for those cool spring nights.

Take along ample film, or have plenty of gigabytes for your digital.

The weather here is very changeable-it can be sunny for an hour, rainy for half an hour, then sunny again. So, it's advisable to always have a raincoat or umbrella prepared!

All four seasons in one day

  • You should bring a light jacket, a relatively heavy sweater, and an umbrella and you should be fine. There are literally 4 seasons in one day. In May 2007, it went from cold drizzle to hot and humid to downpours to freezing wind within a span of a few hours. Your best bet is to layer clothing (shirt, sweater, jacket); this way you can take something off if you get hot and put something back on if you get cold.

Toiletries are really not necessary to bring from home if you would like to conserve space in your luggage. You can easily get these items from stores in Brussels and for the same prices as in the US.

Packing for Airline carry-on bag to avoid problem

The airlines are notorious for losing luggage, we all know that. Yet, there are still people who make the foolish mistake of putting valuable items in their checked luggage! Most airlines allow you a carry-on bag and one personal item (briefcase, laptop or something like that).
Soft-sided luggage constructed from high-tech material is the best for this purpose. You can use it also as pillow, while you are waiting for a long time on the airport and want to rest.

Personal need: toiletries, a change of underwear, some food, a sweater, wet wipes,

Medications, contact lens paraphernalia, asthma tools, and a little handy-pack of tissues should always go into your carry-on bag

Do not forget a small camera and a good Travel Guide! They won't add much space or weight, and are well worth it if you end up spending more time that you expected still and waiting.

The longer the trip, the more items, the larger the Luggage! Just remember, whatever you pack, you have to carry!

Choose a bag that is large enough to handle all the things you need to take, but small enough to fit the size requirements at your airline. Things like this should be carried on your person or packed in a carry-on bag that will fit under the seat.
    • Small valuables: cash, credit cards, jewelry, cameras.
    • Critical items: medicine, keys, passport, tour vouchers, tickets.
    • Irreplaceable items: manuscripts, heirlooms.
    • Fragile items: eyeglasses, glass containers, liquids.
    • Personal need: toiletries, a change of underwear, some food, a sweater, wet wipes,

Remember, the only way to be sure your valuables are not damaged or lost is to keep them with you.
