by chancay Must see in Brussels, although the view from upstairs is not that great, but the exposition inside is nice. The Atomium is the memory monument of the world exposition 1958 in Brussels, inside you find exponents out of that time and a lot of photos from the expo. By the way, it represents an iron crystal molecule increased 165 billions of time Leave a Comment

houses of parliament by chancay We´ve never been in London together, but now we have a photo with Cecilia in front of the parliament ;-) Fantastic work, one of the best works for me here in Mini-Europe.... Take your time to read a bit of the information a little guide book gives. You can get it in several languages at the entrance. Open from 9:30 to 17:00, have a closer look at the website Leave a Comment

MINI EUROPE by patrikske MINI EUROPE is a miniature world displaying models of major events in the history of Europe. Some are hands-on such as the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Visitors can make it happen. There are even scaled down replicas of the Channel Tunnel and the Ariane rocket ! Leave a Comment

by Sjalen She was starting to look her age but was nevertheless a Brussels landmark since the 1950s and in 2007, she is yet again glistening after renovations. Don't expect a visit to Atomium to make your day. There is nothing really exciting up there but if you have time when all else is seen, why not. It is also nice to take close-up photos of it as you can see from my first page. You can get up (in a very fast lift) to the top sphere where you (in nice weather) have a good view of the Brussels skyline in the distance, the airport and the nearby and lovely royal park at Laeken. You also see in to the Heyzel stadium. After that, you work your way down the spheres which have really narrow escalators and round windows so you feel as if you're on a Tintin space ship or something. There is also a bizarre exhibition on internationally unknown Belgian cartoons as well as a quite dramatic film on the making of the Atomium with people climbing around on the spheres in the snow! If you have children it is excellent to combine it with a visit to nearby Mini-Europe. A model village with EU landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and a Greek village. Avoid eating at the adjacent Brupark though. There is so much better food just anywhere else in Brussels. Leave a Comment Directions: In Heyzel, outside the city centre. It is quite a trek to get there as you have to take either tram (for instance 23) or metro 1A to Heyzel - a good half hour ride from downtown Brussels. Good if you

Atomium by martin_nl The Atomium is the symbol of the 1958 world fair that was held in Brussels that year. It look svery impressive, but if you take a close look it seems a bit rusty on the outside. There are some exhibitions inside, but otherwise there is not much of interest to be seen. Leave a Comment

This is the sign of Brussels, like an Eiffle Tower in Paris or Statue of Liberty in New Your City. It is much more imposing in reality than when you watch photos! There is an exibition up but as it was reopened on 18th February, 2006, there is always a long queue and this is why I didn't decided to see an exibition. However, I plan to visit Brussels again and see some more places...:)

by Ronald_T At the foot of the Atomium nestles MINI-EUROPE: a collection of 300 scale models of Europe’s finest buildings, the tiniest details of which are reproduced fully to scale (1/25) with stunning precision. At the weekends during the summer months, this authentic collection of architecture in miniature is also open at night: modern techniques have enabled exact reproductions of lightning that convey all the subtle charms of the original. From spring 2000, visitors can also enjoy an interactive game centred around the theme of Europe. Directions: 1, avenue the Football / Voetballaan within the Bruparck complex at 1020 Brussels (Laeken). Admission: 420 BEF (10.41 €), 250 BEF (6.2 €): children aged 12 and under.Other Contact: Take a

Atomium, Brussels by Fam_Stoica Inaugurated in 1958 for the World Fair, Atomium is a symbol of Brussels. In November 1954, the engineer Andre Waterkeyn, who wished to celebrate scientific progress, hit upon the idea of the Atomium. This was to represent the atomic lattice of iron crystals, magnified 165 billion times linearly, according to the cubic body centered system. The Atomium is thus the visiualization of microscopic molecular structures on a great enlarged scale. The spheres of the Atomium represent the atoms in a crystalline space lattice. The tubes connecting the spheres symbolize the bonding forces between the atoms. The spheres of the Atomium are at five different levels : a) the base sphere, resting on the pavilion which houses the visitors-reception area; b) the three lower spheres, connected to the ground by the stairs in the bipods which 'support' them; c) the central sphere, the only one to be connected to all others; d) the three uppermiddle spheres without vertical 'support' and the only ones inaccessible to the public; e) the uppermost sphere, which crowns the Atomium and where the visitors have a splendid view over Brussels. Each sphere contains two levels and a supplementary service floor in the lower area. The Atomium in figures : Height : 102 metres Weight : 2.400 metric tonnes The spheres : the Atomium has nine spheres (three of them are inaccessible). The bipods : they provide the stability of the Atomium. The escalators : length of the longest escalator in an Atomium tube: 35 metres. Capacity: 3.000 people per hour. The elevator : one of the fastest in Europe. Leave a Comment
