Only for architecturale reasons I wished
we had more kings like 'Leopold II'.
The'Leopold II'-page is rather black in our
history book because of the cruelty in
the Kongo-Kolony.
So I'm only talking about the architecture.

When Belgium turned 50 years old he
ordered 2 gigantic halls for the national
exposition.

One of the halls contains 'Autoworld'.
And if you like old cars you definitely shouldn't
miss out on this museum.
It contains one of the world most precious ,
prestigious and beautiful collections of cars
from 1886 till 1970.

Have a look at http://www.autoworld.be/
A nice website in English , French and Dutch.

planes, planes

Another great museum in the Parque du Cinquantenaire (Jubel Park) is the Royal Museum of the Army and Military History.

In this museum you can see a big collection on costumes and armoury.

In this museum, there is also a big hall filled with big planes.

the big hall

When I visit the Royal Museum of the Army and Military History in the Parque du Cinquantenaire, I have a favourite section : the Air and space section.

In this big hall you can see a lot of big planes, some jets some helicopters. In the big plane you can enter and see the cockpit.

Also this big hall is sometimes used for exercises by the special forces of the Belgium army. Once I did see them doing exercises high in the roof of this hall.

German Helmets

In the Royal Museum of the Army and Military History (Parque du Cinquantenaire) you can see a unique collection of arms.

Also you can see the evolution and history of the Belgium army, with lots of old costumes and gear.

There are also costumes of different countries, like these collection of German helmets (see picture).

This is a wonderful museum.

Scouting reunion

The weekend that I visited the temporary exposition on the link between the adventures of Kuifje and Peru, in the museum of art and history, there was a big scouting reunion in the Parque du Cinquantenaire.

It was a colourful sight; there was a big scene with life music.

In the background you can see the big hall of another museum, Autoworld. Here you can see a unique collection of oldtimers, and also a big collection of American cars, like Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, . . .
Of course you can also see the famous Belgian Minerva cars.

The Cinquantenaire park

Jubel Park

Whenever you keep on following the Wetstraat, you came in a beautiful park, The Cinquantenaire Park (Jubel Park).

It is kind of a quiet park which surrounds a big palace, where the two wings are connected with a big Arcade.

There is even a small tower in the park. When I did post this tip, I did not knew the historical background of this tower. But the answer to this mystery came already the next morning, thanks to our good friend Norali, who told me that this was The Tour de Tournai (Tower of Tournai / Doornik), built to highlight the possible uses of Tournai stone. (thank you very much, Norali)

Museum of Art and History

ne of the museums in the Parque du Cinquantenaire is the Museum of Art and History.

In this museum you can see lots of art and historical objects from different periods, like the old Egypt, The old Rome, there is also a beautiful collection of wall carpets.

And frequently there are special temporary expositions in this museum.
Like two years ago, I visited an exposition on the link between Peru and the comic books of Kuifje (Tin Tin). I believe that Kuifje is well known all over the world, and is made by Herge, one of our best Comics drawers.

It was a beautiful exposition with lots of local art from Peru, and then they made the connection with the drawings in the different Kuifje Comics books. It was really interesting to see all this.

Gallery of Columns

The Triumph Arch is a very beautiful monument. Left and right from this Arch there the two wings of the Palace, which are now used as museums.

These wings are kind of connected by the Gallery of Columns.

This Gallery is decorated with a very big and beautiful Mosaic (360 square meters).
These Mosaics symbolise "The Glorification of a Heroic and Peaceful Belgium". (Wow, that is a mouth-full).
These Mosaics were finished in 1932.

Beautiful Quadriga

The building of the Triumph Arch in the Cinquantenaire Park was not finished in 1880. But is finished in 1905.

On top of this big Arcade you can see a beautiful statue, a Quadriga, a chariot pulled by for horses.

Other famous Quadriga you can see on top of the Brandenburger Tor in Berlin.

The person in the chariot is carrying the national flag.
