The Parc du Cinquantenaire or Jubelpark, is one of the most impressive green spaces in the capital of Belgium, is also one of the largest in the urban heart of Brussels, with 30 acres of lawns, trees and trails in perfect symmetry. The Cinquantenaire Park was built to host the World Expo, commissioned by King Leopold II to celebrate the Jubilee of 50 years of independence from Brussels in 1880.

  • The Cinquantenaire

    by MiguelPS2112 Updated Dec 21, 2004

The Cinquantenaire is similar to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It is not as big as the one in Paris but can be seen from a distance in neighbouring areas. The Cinquantenaire is made up to three arches compared to one in Paris. The Cinquantenaire also has two museums on its sides. The Automobile Museum and the War Museum. The Automobile Museum has a beautiful selection of old cars. The war museum has different sections on battles and wars from a couple hundred years ago to wars in the 20th century. Its also a big park where you can go for a walk, its a beautifull area

    Arch du Cinquantenaire

For the 50th anniversary of Belgian independence in 1880, King Leopold II commissioned the creation of this park and its grandiose triumphal arch.

Today, you can visit some of its museums, Autoworld and the Jubelpark Museum, or you can rest on the plush lawn and admire the solemn manor houses. The Great Mosque and the Temple of Human Passions (Victor Horta's first monument) can also be found here.

Every year on July 21st, on the occasion of National Festival Day, there is an evening fireworks display. Jubelpark is an idyllic spot for everyone.

The arc of the Parc du Cinquantenaire

The Parc du Cinquantenaire is a very big
parc located in central Brussels. It was designed by king Leopold.

It has a big arch, which remembered me a lot the Arc du Triomphe in Paris. But don't tell that to a Bruxellois, he'll kill me!

On the sides of the arch there are some museums. If you like military history and aviation, I recommend visiting the Musee Royale de l'Histoire Militaire et de l'Aviation. It covers all the 20th-century military history of Belgium. On its aviation part, you can see some planes, including a Caravelle of Sabena, a MiG and an F-15.

This photo was taken from the Hop On Hop Off bus as we drove past the park.

The triumphal arch was built in 1880 to celebrate 50 years of Belgian independence.

The rooms are now used for museums.

Take a metro to station Merode, you'll get out next to Brussels Arc de Triomphe. The park next to it is a perfect place to walk or to sit and relax.
