Kunstberg / Mont des Arts by filipdebont Almost halfway between the Royal Park and the small garden of Petit Sablon, you find an extraordinary area. It is also an ideal way to get from the lower city centre (Grote Markt) to the higher Part of Brussels (Coudenberg). In this neighbourhood you find all kind of museums, concert halls, theatres and historical monuments. Coming from the Albertina plein (Place de l'Albertine) you can walk up via the stairs in the small park, and like this you will reach the museum area. This little park is a real eye catching gem it is situated in Sablon Square where forty eight little statues ring both the square and the park. I will place a picture of the statues in an albulm as I realise while writing I did not include one. The park is small but well tended with many statues of Counts of Brussels framed by natures best greenery. The centre piece is a statue and water fountain commemorating the Counts of Egmont and Hoorne who were executed in the nearby Market Place by order of Philip ll of Spain in 1568. We enjoyed our stroll around here - a little bit of peace a step from a noisy city. Leave a Comment

On our last day in Brussels just strolling around enjoying the sunshine we came upon the Jardin D'Egmont. I was surprised to see a statue of Peter Pan in the park when I knew his home is in London. This little park seemed to be a place for locals where children played not on play equipment but played ball games on the grass. We stopped for a coffee here at the charming Orangerie (the telephone number is for the restaurant) the waiter explained they were only serving lunch but agreed to serving the coffee. Although you can still glimpse the cities buildings through the trees the park is a quiet and peaceful place to enjoy one last coffee in the Spring sunshine. Frederik , Egmont and Hoorn by belgianchocolate 1890 , we are in the middle of the art nouveaux period. But the garden looks more classic. 'Paul Hankar' designed 48 statues to put round the formal garden. These bronze statues symbolise each a different midieval guild active in the city. In the center of the garden we'll find 'Egmont and Hoorn two earls that where behead by the Spanish earl Alva because of their dedication in the war for independance. They are surrounded by 18 statues of important figures in the history of the southern Netherlands. This garden was also one of king 'leopold II' projects to give Brussels , Belgium a more important and beautifull edge. België , etymological means the southern Netherlands. Egmont and Hoorne by filipdebont Centrally in the small park, Le Petit Sablon, you can not miss the big statue of Egmont and Hoorne. This statue is made by the sculpture Charles-Auguste Fraikin. The statue symbolises the resistance against the Spanish tyranny; both persons were killed on June the 5th 1568, in front of La Maison du Roi. (House of the King). Le Petit Sablon by filipdebont In the small park, Le Petit Sablon, you can see, besides the big statue of Egmont and Hoorne, lots of white Carrara marble statues. These statues represent the heroes who fought against the Spanish tyranny or intellectuals and scientists from the 16th century. They all have in common the fact that they devoted their lives to conquering their freedom of thought. Some of the names of the statues: William of Orange-Nassau, Corneille de Vriendt (sculptor and architect of the Antwerp City Hall), Gerard Mercator (geographer), . . . Le Petit Sablon by filipdebont Opposite the Our lady of Sablon Church there is a small park. It is Le Petit Sablon (de kleine Zavel). At first this park was a square. This park is surrounded by a fence which is decorated with 48 beautiful small statues; these statues represent the different Brussels trades. Leave a Comment Address: Regentschapstraat

Garden of Sculptures by filipdebont This garden is located just next to the Museum of Fine Arts. Probably this was the location of a former botanical garden. It is great to see the combination of nature and art. In this garden there is a collection of remarkable trees (like the locust trees, plane trees, . . . ); of course there is also a nice collection of statues with the woman as theme. We first sighted these gardens during our Hop On Hop Off bus tour as the bus stopped in traffic directly outside the gardens. I immediately said we will return later and spend some time in this small but beautifully laid out park. We returned next day to enjoy the park and its 48 bronze statutes, each one representing a different medieval guild of the city. The gardens were established in 1890 and the centre point is a fountain with statutes to commemorate Counts Egmont and Hornes. When we visited in early September the gardens were in splendid condition with many colourful flower beds, roses and shady trees. In fact we rested on the benches beneath the trees. Leave a Comment

Albert I by filipdebont After I had completely descended from the Kunstberg / Mont des Arts, I arrived at the Albertina plein / Place de l'Albertine. They were big works going on at this square, so it was not very attractive to make pictures here. When I turned around I looked up the Kunstberg, and in front was the big statue of one of our former Kings: King Albert (the first of course). And on the right hand side is the big Royal Library Albert I. This library is erected in the 15th century during the reign of the Dukes of Burgundy. This library contains the biggest collection of books in Belgium. Besides the books, there is also the museum of the book, the 15th century Nassau Chapel, a department with maps, a token and print cabinet. Leave a Comment Address: Albertina plein
