Golden Tours bus by toonsarah As we only had one day in which to see Brussels we decided to get a ticket for one of the “hop-on, hop-off” buses that tour the city. There appeared to be at least three companies operating these, all following more or less the same route. We chose Golden Tours, simply because we’d picked up a leaflet at the tourist information centre on the Grand Place and could buy our tickets from there. I have mixed feelings about whether to recommend this tour, perhaps because it isn’t something we usually do and I’m not sure whether or not this was a good example. It certainly fulfilled our aim of seeing more of the city than we could otherwise have done, and would have been a good way to identify places we might want to return to for a closer look if time had permitted. And we took advantage of the hop-on hop-off principle to do just that – at the Rue Nueve to look for lunch and at the Atomium. But the promised multi-lingual commentary, on aging and rather grubby headphones, wasn’t worth bothering with, and the bus had a tendency to linger too long at a few of the stops where there was little to be seen, which was a frustrating waste of some of our precious minutes. On the whole though I think it was just about worth the 16 EUR (per person) that we paid – but maybe you should try a different company in the hope of at least getting cleaner headphones!

beautiful clock by filipdebont While I walked through the small park at the Kunstberg (Mont des Arts), I did see this strange clock on my right hand side. Above the Arcade there was a great clock, it is a Jaquemart clock. A Jacquemart is a clock where a kind of figure hits the clock, in order to announce the change of hour. Lots of old buildings (churches, belfries,...) in Belgium have such a Jaquemart. The Jaquemart at the Kunstberg/Mont des Arts, is not a historical one or a copy of a historical one. The clock is names The Citizen of Brussels. At these clock there are several figures, the one on top (with the big bell) symbolises the mayor of Brussels, further on there a figures which represent a worker, a Gaul, a Djembe player, J. Van Artevelde, P. P. Rubens, . . Leave a Comment Address: Kunstberg / Mont des Arts

beautiful building by filipdebont During my Sunday morning walk, coming from the Palace of the Nation till the Palace of Justice, I noticed lots of beautiful buildings. So it is not only at de Grote Markt (La Grande Place) that you can see these great buildings. Just look around while you are walking, and you will see. Leave a Comment

Palace of the Nation by filipdebont I started my walk at the Metro station "Wet/Kunst ; Loi/Art". I walked in the Wetstraat, like this I the first beautiful building I did saw, was the Belgian parliament, this is also called the palace of the Nation. It was built during the reign of Karel Van Lotharingen (Charles of Lorraine), and after a big fire in 1883, it was rebuilt. It is located near the Royal Park; at the other side of the Royal Park is the Royal Palace. Leave a Comment Address: Wetstraat

A guided walk by guide or audiophone in Marollen by irisbe De Marollen is the place of the common people of Brussels and is situated in downtown, in the shadow of the Palace of Justice. If you are at the Poelaertplein and take the elevator down you will find yourself in no time in downtown at a nice little square During the war this area was very much damaged by bombing. The rubbish was cleaned up and replaced by grey houses. The people who lived in this area hated Joseph Poelaert because they held him responsible for the demolishing of 100rds of houses that needed to disappear so the "Schieven Architect" could build his mastodont of a palace. He would not live the finishing as he went totally crazy before it got completed. You might also see some street vendors selling their “karakollen”, a kind of snail boiled in some bouillon. It smells a bit to fish and you need to chew on it. Here people were named Ketjes and they spoke the local dialect, a kind of Flemish but then with a big accent and their own colourful words. Nowadays a lot of immigrants have moved into this part of the town as well and are housed in many of the social houses. It makes the neighbourhood very “colourful”. Here people still live and kids still play on the street. The Marollen area is getting urbanized in a way that it might inflict on its original identity. Where it used to be for years a place to avoid, it becomes more and more touristy, old houses are replaced, more fancy shops settling in. If you don’t want to miss to visit this area, I would recommend you to do it soon, bearing in mind I write this tip in 2004 From 2004 on you can hire an audiophone and walk the whole parcours with a plan. The tourist information centre will help you out. Of course you can also hire a guide when in group and have the luck, like I did to have some one telling you all about this place and being able to ask questions. I don't think an audiophone will reply `-) Leave a Comment Directions: View "of the beaten path" tips or pay a visit at my Fotki album starting from this picture on.

We had 5 days in Brussels and intended to take day trips to Brugge and Aachen. With time in Brussels being short and so much to see we decided to take the Hop On Hop Off bus. Tickets were Euro 18 for a 24 hour pass and very good value. First departure is 10am at Central Station with the trip taking 90 minutes should you decide not to hop off. Last departure is 4pm and 5pm on Friday to Sunday inclusive. The tour visits the Lower and Upper Town with the majority of time being in the upper town which was ideal for us as we had accommodation close to Grand Place in the Lower Town. We found the tour to be excellent and next day went back to the sights which we wished to see in detail. Leave a Comment

Elevator to the Marollen by filipdebont As the Poelaert Square is located on the Gallows Hill (Galgenberg), one of the 7 Brussels Hills, it is quite a climb up here if you are coming from the Marollen Quarter. Some time ago they have build a modern elevator, from the Marollen up to the higher Poelaert Square. From this elevator you have a great panorama over the city. The building of this elevator was even on National Television. By the way, the use of this elevator is free (no fee). Leave a Comment

Royal Musical Conservatory by filipdebont As I continued my journey along the Regentschapstraat towards the palace of justice, I did see another remarkable building. It was the Royal Musical Conservatory. This building dates from the 19th century and was designed by J.-P. Cluysenaar. The style of this building could be described as predominantly French Neo-Renaissance. Leave a Comment Address: Regentschapstraat

Egmont Palace by filipdebont As I did leave Le Petit Sablon Park at the rear side, there was a beautiful Palace. It is really amazing how many beautiful old buildings there are in Brussels. So behind the Petit Sablon Park, there is the Egmont Palace. This was the palace of the Counts of Egmont. In the middle of the 18th century it became property of the Arenberg family. And since 1964 it is State property. Leave a Comment Address: Rue des Petits Carmes
