Because it is a business centre AND a European centre for car trading, many people drive around in expensive cars. If you belong to this group, be aware of car jackers at red lights. Whatever car you drive, keep your doors locked and women, keep your handbags out of sight in the car.
Take care in the 'Euro' metro stations (Schuman, Malbeek, Merode, Beaulieu) if you travel alone in the evening and are more than casually dressed. Gangs harass you as they know this is where people make money. Art-Loi is OK as it is a junction with loads of people travelling all the time.
Also be vigilant if you travel to/from South Station (Midi) with the Eurostar/TGV/Thalys. The area is surrounded by poor quarters and people know that you have money if you can travel on fast trains.
Having said these things, I feel much safer in Brussels than in cities like Stockholm (where I come from!)
Brussels is like any other big City in Europe. so the genral advisories. I f female dont walk around on your own at night. Pickpockets on the public transpoort system are to be wary of. be careful of Taxi Drivers asking for more than the fare shown.
Dont wander the streets at night in this end of the city its the turkish ghetto area, I personally had to use some peace making to keep me and my friend from getting mugged by a gang of turkish guys.
