Belgium is the country with the best beer in the world (we try to be objective). Therefore, your stay in Brussels cannot be complete without a visit to one of the many typical and beautiful cafes and pubs that you will find here. Try the local beers of Brussels Gueuze or fruit beer (cherry beer, raspberry beer, peach beer ) or a wonderful Trappist beer, made in one of the Abbeys of Belgium. Be Careful when drinking a Trappist beer. These beers tend to be very strong (between 8 and 11.5 percent of alcohol. BEER RELATED VISITS The Brewery Museum (Grote Markt 10, Grand'Place, 1000 Brussels) Open every day from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission: 100 Bfr per person. The Gueuze Museum (Gheudestraat 56, Rue Gheude, 1070 Brussels (Anderlecht)).This museum is situated in the sill operational Cantillon brewery and is famous for its authentic Lambic beers. Before entering this brewery and museum, forget all you know about the taste of beer, and then try a Cantillon Gueuze or Kriek (cherry beer)

Brussels has two official languages: French and Flemish. All street names are bilingual: owing to space restrictions in this guide, only the French appears in the main body of the text. However, the region is largely (about 90%) French-speaking, a trend increasing as the grip of the EU tightens. Commuters increase the percentage of Flemish speakers during the day, but in the evening, the city settles down to speak French. French is spoken with a distinctive accent and vocabulary, enriched with a peppering of English and Flemish words. The Flemish spoken differs from Dutch largely in terms of pronunciation. The Bruxellois dialect Bruesselse Sproek or Marollien is a rich medley of Flemish and French, some Spanish and even Hebrew. Hence ‘toffe’ from the Hebrew ‘tov’ means good. Certain colloquial phrases are baffling to all but locals – ‘non peut-ętre’ (literally translated as ‘no maybe’) actually means ‘yes, definitely’ and ‘Ça, t’as vu!’ (literally translated as ‘did you see that!’) means ‘no, not at all!’ English is increasingly becoming the accepted language for business, not only because of multinationals or the presence of ex-pats, but simply because it is a neutral language. Some signposts even appear in Latin.

The architecture here is beautiful, in the old part of the city. It is also the cleanest large city I have ever seen. I have been to many large cities and generally expect them to be dirty, but Bruxelles surprised me greatly. There was also a small stand on the street, selling escargot. You could eat it right there. While in Paris, I ate a fair amount of excargot, but it was only in Bruxelles that I found street vendors for the treat.
