    'Belgian waffles' are the best!
There is no harm in telling this.
From all the sorts of waffles the 'Brussels waffle'
    is the queen of waffles.

    Some tips?
A Brussels waffle is always eaten fresh baked.
Never accept a warmed up one and for sure
not one the put into the microwave over.
It is a classical dessert and Belgians like to
eat them with all sorts of garnitures.

In the picture you can see my personal favorite..
    'Brusselse wafel MIKADO'
meaning with icecream , wipped cream
and with real melted hot chocolate.

    Where to find them?
Often grand brasseries and more posh
grand cafés have got them on the menu.
You can find some nice one on my Antwerp
page. And last bot not least , if you visit a
'kermis' or a fair with attractions , seek for
    them there.

    Schotel Américaine préparé: A traditional...

A Belgian traditional you will find often on the
menu , also served as a snack...
    'Schotel Américaine' 'assiette Americaine'

    'Américaine preparé' is mixed beef.
Everybody adds it's own ingredients and spices.
Often a special mixture is referred to as
    'made by the chef'.
It is popular put on a toast , then it is
    called 'toast cannibal'.
You can have it in the take-away sandwich
    bar ...

But in a restaurant it is served with fries
and a lot of garniture. A salad for sure ,
mayonaise and pickles , onion ...etc.

Prices between 8 and 12 euro.
Depends on the quality. Keep one thing in
mind , it is raw meet. It should be eaten
fresh , never buy some at the delicacy store ,
the supermarket or the butcher to eat it...later.
    Eat it fresh.

    Belgians love aspargus.
They breed them like they are best ,
white and long , it takes a lot of effort.
You need to make the soil higher above
the root , so it can't come above the soil.

That is the trick not to let them turn green.
They also need to be breeded in very
thick clay-ground. Then they are best.

All of that needs to be done by hand ,
    that makes them rather expensive.

At the beginning of may they are ready ,
and saint-Jan at the 24th of june decides
    the season is over.

We eat them in many many ways.
In some restaurants you can eat a whole menu.
Soup , a le flamande : with eggs or like in the picture with salmon. Often used in salads as well.

    Just try one...maybe you'll
    discover a new favorite dish.

BEER - and cheese - of ORVAL

    Restored Abbey - 1926 - of
    Orval
    by mtncorg
The taste of Orval is certainly unique, from the skittle (bowling) pin shaped bottle to the dry-hopped, triple fermented distinctive fluid within. The beer starts with an all-malt mash infusions with candy sugar being added in the first fermentation along with Kent Golding hops for bitterness. The beer is held for six weeks at 14C and then a second fermentation. Primed and re-yeasted, a third fermentation takes place in the bottle. Peak value is gained after a year with 3 years being optimum for storage. Never to be refrigerated, though that is the only way we get it here in the US - and that is usually $5+ per bottle prior to the recent dollar devaluation :-0

You can have your beer at the brewpub along a lake next to the abbey or go to the abbey shop and buy a case to go along with their cheese and bread. Then you will see why the fathers at Orval are so happy.

There is only one beer brewed here and its is world class. Orval comes from the French 'Val d'or' meaning Valley of Gold. The beer is golden in color and taste.

  • A yummy Belgian Waffle, make sure to try one! - Belgium
    A yummy Belgian Waffle, make
    sure to try one!
    by Ann75
Belgian Waffles are very tasty. These waffles are not a breakfast., this is a yummy snack! Most people in North America know waffles, but mainly only as a breakfast.

The nicest waffles you can get at any coffee shop, cafe, diner or restaurant in Belgium is called a "Brussels Waffle". These are big poofy warm waffles that are loaded with lots of goodies of your choice. You can get icing sugar on them, fruit, ice cream, hot chocolate sauce and more.

Other waffles that are served hot are the "Luikse Waffles". There are not so poofy and much more filling, you can buy these at stands along the streets or on the market square. You'll smell them from a mile away! These waffles are also served with several toppings of your choice, if you wish any topping at all.

    ENJOY!

  • A tasty Belgian Friet with mayonaise - Belgium
    A tasty Belgian Friet with
    mayonaise
    by Ann75
When you are in Belgium you must try thos very tasty fries that Belgium is also known for. I think the fries in Belgium are the best I've ever eaten in my whole life. I grew up with these things and I love them. The fries are so good because they are fried twice...not once as they do in North America.

Anyway, just buy a pack at one of the many
"Frituur" stands or shops. I am sure you'll enjoy them! I love a pack of fries with mayonaise on top, yes we Belgians usually have our fries with mayonaise...yuummmy!

Now that I live in Canada I have my fries with ketchup when I eat them out as they don't give you the choice of mayonaise. But at home I still take mayonaise!

    Litzberg
    by Ann75
De Litzberg is a combination of cafe and restaurant. You can enjoy a drink on their patio or enjoy a tasty meal. This restaurant is restored ranch type building from 1853.

The restaurant looks great on the inside and is very cozy, there is also a fire place that you can enjoy on the colder winter days.

They have many possibilties from a business dinner to a fast lunch or a romantic dinner for two. You can choose anything from their menu card. You can also enjoy a lovely guide nature walk followed by a meal which cost 15.00 euro's a person. They also offer horse carriage rides. This restaurant holds about 100 people and they have friendly and fast service.

One of my favorite meals here is the Wiener Schnitzel with a mushroom sauce. This meal is served with fresh vegetables (mainly lettuce, tomatoes and some other greenery) and a batch of fries. If you have this meal with a couple of drinks (also if it would be wine) will probably cost you around 15.00 euro.

Located along the canals of Brugge you can find many fine places to eat. What is better than to enjoy on a wet, cool day than a good local beer, a hot bowl of split pea soup with some good warm bread? Straffe Hendrie is a bit away from the main events in Brugge, which makes it that much more fun.

The beer. I have heard some say that the brewery is a bit too touristy - go in the winter and you won't find it such :-) There is other beers from Brugge besides here, but we didn't complain about what we drank:-]

A serving of mussels and fries
    by Ann75
If you like seafood and fries, then you definitely should try a dish of Mussels and Fries. The mussels are usually prepared in different ways and you can choose how you like it. Mostly you'll get a big pot of mussels served with a portion of the yummy Belgian fries.

This is a typical Belgian dish, especially in the summer. It's also available outside the summer season, but not always.

You can get this dish at most restaurants in Belgium.

    Belgians love greay shrimps ,
    they are a ral delicacy.

These little animals live in the north sea.
They first get cooked and then skinned.
That isn't an easy job and if you've never done
that before , it is a hard job and takes long.
By that , you also know the reason why they are
so expensive. Labour in Belgium is expensive.
One kilo will easely cost 25 euro.

The ones you will find in the supermarket
aren't skinned in Belgium. We bring them
to north morocco where they get skinned in
large factories and the people there got
    payd per weight they've done.
That makes them also a little unhealthy.
The preservatives used are. Do the Belgians care?
    What do you think.

In some restaurants they get skinned by hand.
But I'll hope you'll have a mastercard then.
In some fish shops you can buy them
fresh , cooked , but not skinned , less expensive
but a hell of a job. From the skins one can make
    the best sauce.

    How they taste?
    That is hard to discribe.
They taste a little bit salty and got a lot of flavour.

    How do we eat them?

Probably most popular are in a salad.
A very popular one is tomates-crevettes.
Or tomaat garnaal. We fill a tomato with shrimps
    and mayonaise or coctailsauce.

As an appetizer try the homemade
    garnaalkroketten or shrimp croquettes.
For two they cost about 8-12 euro or more.
    Make sure they are homemade.

The as I said the shells are used to made
divine sauces. They are also used in
stew pots with different kinds of fish.
Often referred too as 'oostends vispotje'.
