Ostend Queen - fish brasserie: The sense of Pierre Wynants

by Luchonda

Kursaal Ostend was restaured at the end of 2004The restaurant on top is a nice place to be with friends, enjoying an excellent meal, payable, although the "chef de cuisine" is nobody else than P.Wynants - the owner of restaurant "Comme chez soi" in Brussels. The view on the beach of Ostend is perfect. The restaurant is still under construction ( feb/2005) but acceptable. The elevator to the second floor produce sea sounds - the chairs are special in this sense that they give a feeling of being in the middle of seatrip. Brasserie Latem: Seasonbounded but inventive cuisine

by Luchonda

Peter and Katrien - the owners of this Brasserie/Restaurant started 14 years ago in a renovated ex-restaurant. The exclusive wine cellar (more than 700 selections) is famous and open for public sales if you are a client. The large black bord in a rather private part of the brasserie is used for comments of wine lovers : i quote some :- What is the definition of a good wine - tasting it should start and end with a good laugh.- I love coocking and using a good bottle of wine - even more i use the wine sometimes to upgrade the meal itself.- Not always believe your private doctor - he himself adores a good glass of wine ! An Italian Ham dish as starter and a Tournedos a la maison called Tournedos Rossini, enriched with a subliem red Italian wine.

various: Frites

by Sjalen

The french fries were as everyone knows invented in Belgium, NOT France. The reason they are known as French is because American soldiers heard of them in French language. Not that they are anything like what I call french fries anyway. Belgian fries or "frites" are chunky, and moreover they are fried an extra time to give them that soft, yet crispy texture and excellent taste. There really is no better "chip" and in our family, we still call a fried potato a "frit" these days in honour of the best ones. :) The best ones are usually found in food stalls or kiosks in the streets (look for "fritkot") and my favourites are in Place St Jourdain in Brussels and Vridagmarkt in Gent. Frits with lots of Belgian mayo!

Ganda Ham: Belgian ham!

by belgianchocolate

There was a time that Belgium was coveredcompletely with forrest. And that was before Belgium even existed. In that forrest pigsfeeded themselves with leaves of ancient oaks , acorns , horse chesnuts...The old Belgians kept these pigs for their meat. The romans were so impressed by thissalted and dried meat that soon loads ofthat meat ended up in ROME.200 years before Christ Cato wrote ;'In Italy , in underground storages one can find3000 to 4000 hams from Belgica'.So far the promo blabla from Ganda itself. What I can tell you is that the ham tastes great. That it is prepared in a natural way. That it takes minimum 9 till 12 month to dry.Porc meat , salt are the only ingredients. And they got a nice websiteYou can find them in the better butchery andin some you can find the 18 months dried ones.I do think they equal the quality of those famousItalian hams... give it a go.

Carestel: Motoway Munchies In Belgium

by Mariajoy

There are 31 of these service stations/rest stops in Belgium, providing a loo break and fast food ( it looked quite nice!) for the weary traveler. They also have conference rooms and children's play areas. Carestel are the market leaders in motorway catering in Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark and Sweden. (See how much research I do???)It costs 30c to use the toilet facilities but the attendant gave us a 30c voucher for a hot or cold drink of our choice to be used before 31st Dec 05. What an offer!!! Book me on the Eurostar! - I'm on my way! I only had the coffee for 1.55euros. We sat outside in the sunshine on the terrace and it was actually a very nice break! Well done Belgium :))

Le Tank Grill in Celles: A cafe in a historic location otherwise unnoticed

by Paul2001

Why go to Le Tank Grill? Well I can think of no other reason but for the fact that you can have lunch like I did by a tank that actually fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Other than that the cafe was nothing more that a road side stop. I should mention that this tank probably represents the deepest penetration by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. It is a Panther tank which oddly enough never gets mentioned in the movies but was arguably the best tank the Germans had in their arsenal. I noticed that the tank's armour was not penetrated by any kind of projectile so I suspect that the tank was abandoned by it's crew when it ran out of gas. A more qualified historian my correct me but I have read that the "Germans" who captured Celles were in fact Poles who joined the Nazi side. I had a decent and cheap sandwich with some fine Belgium beer.
