Shrimp croquette

by Helga67

Shrimp croquette: this is my favourite snack when I am at the Belgian Coast, because in most of the places at the coast they are fresh and home-made. It's a good snack for lunch or as an appetizer in the restaurants. The meal come with two croquettes filled with Northsea shrimps, served with fresh vegetables and some bread or Belgian fries. You can also combine one shrimp and one cheese croquette or for the veggies: two cheese croquettes.Dutch: garnalenkroketFrench: croquette de crevettes

Belgian Fries

by Helga67

Fries ... Belgians are very fond of it. In every town, you will at least find one place (frituur) where they will sell this golden food. You can buy the fries in mini, small, medium, large and extra large. Keep in mind that the quantity is much more than what you will find at a McDonalds. (The portion on the pic is a "small" and you can only see the top) Add some of the many delicious sauces, (our favourite one is mayonnaise) and some pieces of meat (too many to choose from). When you ask for fries "special", you will get fries with mayo, ketchup and fresh-cut onion.Dutch: frittenFrench: frites

+++ several names +++: Carbonnades flamandes

by Norali

Not about a restaurant in particular, rather about a special dish I like. Not that I like it immediately but I learnt to like it.I use to love beer cuisine: cuisine à la bière, that is very present on Belgian tables. But for some strange reason, I experienced my first Carbonnades à la flamande in a cantine at school and it was not love at first sight at all. Hard meet loaves, like not cooked enough. Tasteful sauce though. Then, I tried it some times in private diners. Well, since there were other dishes, I always had the other dishes. Carbonnades were left aside, except for 1 or 2 spoonfuls to be polite. :) Guiding Diageva through Brussels, wandering in the Marolles, it was my time of reconciliation with Carbonnades flamandes. This time (may 2004), I could taste it from Eva's dish: the meat was tender, like semi-sliced :)... a perfect balance for carbonnades. Yes, it was about time to...

+++ No name +++: My experiences

by Norali

May you be interested in my experiences within restaurants in Belgian cities, please check restaurants tips in the cities I covered.Funny enough, though some pages are in scaffold or not built at all, they may contain some reviews on restaurants and eateries. Did I say I love eating ? Plus, it doesn't have to be expensive. Some notes:- unless you are having diner in a nouvelle-cuisine-type restaurant, portions in restaurants in Belgium are rather on the generous side;- Belgian dishes are not always with mayonnaise, as some would assert here and there;- it's not only about chocolate, beer, mussels and fries. There is more than that;- it is easy to find authentique Belgian cuisine at a moderate price and it is certainly not in Rue des bouchers restaurants in Brussels that you would find them ;- also easy to find other types of cuisine here: from all continents. For that, you'd better check...

+++ No name +++: "Swiss" stuff for Belgian breakfast

by Norali

When you have your breakfast, try something that I should have listed first on my restaurant or food tips group. I am talking about this viennoiserie that resembles a lot pain aux raisins.Whilst pain aux raisins is a bit dry, a COUQUE SUISSE is a bit creamy. It's made with the same paste as pain aux raisins, with raisins and filled with cream in the middle.Though its name translates a swiss origin, I was told this is typically Belgian and discovered/created here. I will find the synopsis explaining it.Yummy!NB: Don't know about its name in Flemish but in Brusels and Wallonia, it is "couque suisse" (pron. "cook swiss"). It can be long or round.. My favourite is the long form: less bread with comparatively same quantity of cream. This gives it a good balance (less stodgy). And even the cream is not that greasy neither overbearing. A bit of cr?me patissi?re with raisins.. sometimes with...

+++ No name +++: Simple rule: tip if happy, skip if angry !

by Norali

In Belgium, tipping is not compulsory... not even regarding social etiquette. Let alone regarding rules and laws. The price you pay is enough. Yet, tipping is not forbidden. My rule, and others', you may tip if you are satisfied and don't tip if you are disappointed... as simple as that. The bill usually includes all you have to pay. However, in Leuven in February 2004, I had an unusual experience, with VT members irisbe, cadzand and suri. In a snack where we chose to grab a bite to have our sandwich, we were surprised when we went paying. We were charged more than what was on the board... because, said the waitress, she had to include VAT in the price, that obviously she hadn't added in the displayed price on the board...Anyways, just to advise about the VAT stuff... and above all, it's not a big difference (VAT rate is at 6%, I think.. if NOT, please advise me). Check the cardmenu to be...

Frituur: Belgian fries not French

by yashiko

Let's get rid of the biggest mistake about fries. Every where (especialy in USA) people call them French Fries. Why? The French don't eat them as we do. And besides we invented them.So from now on, you can call them "Belgian Fries" or "Frieten". And the best place to get them is from streetvendors or windowplaces you can find everywhere. These places are called "Frituur" or "Frietkot" They are greasy and so bad for your health, but soooo tasty. Take them with some mayonaise and fried meat. mmmmnjamie. This is the first thing a Belgian person misses when living abraod. Believe me, I've noticed it myself. Frfies are never better than in Belgium.
