Belgian Lace
  • Tip Rating:
  • As far as shopping goes, Belgian lace is probably the most well-known product, and the one most shoppers would want to buy while visiting Belgium. Shoppers can choose between several kinds of lace. Regular lace originated in Flanders in the sixteenth century. Needlepoint lace originated in Italy, but Brussels became the major manufacturing center for it. And finally, bobbin lace comes from Brugges. It requires thousands of meticulous movements of bobbins and pins during its manufacture.

Ironically, most of the lace available in Belgium nowadays comes from either China or Taiwan, where it is handmade, or from France, where it is machine-made. It can be difficult to find genuine Belgian lace, since even the most expensive shops do not differentiate between Belgian lace and that made outside the country. Once found, Belgian lace can be very expensive, due to the labor costs involved, and the fact that buyers are paying for the reputation of the product.

smoked wild boar meat: Something from the ardennes?
  • Tip Rating:

  • If you are visiting the ardennes ,
that beautiful natural parth in the south of
our country and you want to take something
home as a souvenir....why not this?

It is a delicacy and is eaten raw or baked ,
you can ad it in pasta and make fantastic sauces.
Cut it really thin and eat it with bread.

The nice thing is that it has a lot of flavor
and can easely stand up to italian quality.

I'll ad just one adress , but of course there
are more...(La roche en Ardenne is very
touristy and has got some butchers)

    Maasmechelen village: a shopping village

A whole village dedicated to shopping...

I know, I know... Yes, "Another one" you may say.

But look, this one is different from others we have in Belgium.

It's all about chic and casual shopping but with lighter bills. How is it possible? Maasmechelen Village boutiques display discount prices of preceeding year's collection. The cut is reported to level, at least, at 33% of the preceeding year' s prices.

A wide range of brand names, Belgian as well as international ones. Both Prêt-à-porter and casual brand names. Sometimes even, couture: say "Versace", they have it. "Tommy Hilfiger", it's waiting for you, with TH Denim too. Scapa, Nicole Cadine, Pepe Jeans, UC of Benetton and many more... even Petit Bateau, soo cute!

If the idea of wearing last year collection freezes you bit, have a look at the website to see some windowdisplay. The place is children-friendly, offers several amenities (parking, Italian restaurant, pub with Belgian cuisine, Italian ice-cream parlour, baby changing rooms and playground with toboggan...) and organizes shuttles from the train station to the Village. Definitely, it should be a nice place to shop in and pricing seems interesting as well.

clothes - shoes - accessories - home furniture - travel items..

    Monday to Thursday: 10:00 - 18:00.
    Friday and Saturday: 10:00 - 19:00.
Check the website for Holiday schedule.

Outside of Antwerp there is a very huge shopping complex. Besides the many shops, there are also a lot of nice eateries and a care center for children. It's a great place to visit when it is rainy or hot. You can easily spend a whole day here and have a great lunch and/or dinner.

The shopping center is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Fridays to 9 p.m.). Closed on Sundays and bank holidays.

    Almost everything, but especially clothes.

    Normal prices

    Belgian chocolates
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Belgian Chocolate Praline is not to be confused with the American praline. Pralines in Belgium are sublime chocolate confections, the highest achievement of the chocolate maker art: A beautifully sculpted chocolate shell concealing a center of filling explodes with a surprise of texture and flavor in your mouth. Many chocolatiers still make their pralines by hand. Every town and even small villages have chocolate stores with luxurious pralines.

    Famous Belgian Chocolate:
    Galler
    Godiva
    Leonidas
    Neuhaus
    Burie

    Confiserie Roodthooft: Caramella mokatine
  • Tip Rating:

  • There are things that never change.
One of them is the 'Caramella Mokatine'.
When I was little this was for sure the candy
we ate at grandma's. And now , the grandma's
I know still give it to their children.

One thing , grandma's with false teeth don't eat
them. haha. You can shew them , but they
are quit hard and sticky. But the taste...mocca ,
sugar , coffee. It is delicious.

In 1925 Louis Roodhooft started the company.
Their sweets became an instant succes.
Their factory is located in Antwerp , in the
    lange leemstraat near 'Berchem station'.
10 people produce about 500 tons of candy
    each year.

Their new candies are distributed in bakeries
and more special store. The mocatine can
be found in almost any supermarket (like GB ,
    carrefour , Delhaize...)

    Maasmechelen Village: For the shopaholics..
  • Tip Rating:

  • If you like shopping this might just be the
place for you. An outlet shopping village'.

Over 85 brand new shops in a long cozy street.
This street is created for this purpose on an old
mine site and the architectue is nice.

Outlet collections are a bit older then you
will find in shops outside shopping village ,
but prices are up to 60% lower.

I'm not a shopper for clothes myself but I do
need to buy some clothes now and then.
I payed 30 euro for kicker shoes while the
same cost 130 euro in a regular shop.
(and the ones I wear look the same for about the
    last 20 years for sure....)

Check on the website for the shops names
and what to get. A fine selection of international brands
is availeble as well as Belgian disigners.
    Some house decorationsshops , underwear...

AND a Belgian can't do without some restaurants
    snacks , dinners and bars...
    Large parking

Supermarkets, Brasseries artisanales, Cheese shops: Cheese, anyway

One who visits Belgium should try this under-rated specialty. This little country is stuck between 2 cheese- countries but in fact, it really can compete with both of them. The visitors who dare to stroll in the municipality markets will be suprised with quality and variety (300 sorts in soft paste, hard paste, raw, blue, goat, beer-refined cheeses...) here. OK, since not everybody would have time to do that, there are cheese shops and, at lesser extent, supermarkets.

OK, in Belgium, forget Brie, Camembert, Emmental, Comté and Cantal..etc. Head to the many cheese shops and ask for some Belgian specialties. In Brussels, the one that comes to my mind is Au Suisse. It's in boulevard Anspach 73-75, in the center of the city. A huge variety of cheeses. OK, the name says "Suisse" but it is truly Belgian.

As I live in the suburbs, I know more of the cheese shops in my area. They would be too far from the center, anyway.

    In supermarkets, my fave are:
    - Herve doux (Mild taste, in green package). The red-orange packed one has a stronger taste and a more stressed smell). Keep it in the fridge.:-)
    - Fromages d'abbaye (Abbey cheeses)
I like the Maredsous one with wholegrain bread with nothing or sometimes a thin layer of mustard. I think they are best served with their beers (abbeys' beers).
    - Vieil Aubel
    - Passendaele
    - Once, I tried a cheese in Antwerp, called Pié (or Pié Roger). Seems like a local cheese, or at least, one that is to be found in this cheeseshop only (?). But boy, it was heavenly ! I will ask her about the name.

Otherwise, GB supermarkets have "Traiteur service". It is a large stall where one can still buy cheese and cooked meats as in traiteur. A woman cuts the slices you want of the huge range there, will weigh and pack. Then, you'll pay it to the cashier-desk.

Most special, imo, are the beer-refined cheeses that you find in breweries (the brasseries artisanales). I have tried some in Wallonia. They use to be served with in-house beers and their draft bread and, of course, the beer itself. Otherwise, your runs in the "terroirs" can be opportunities to try them (in abbeys, castles, farms...).

OK, some names (taken from Wikipedia website) that may interest you :

    *In (from ?) Flanders:
Abbaye d'Affligem, Abbaye de Corsendonck, Abbaye de Poste, Abbaye de Westmael, Bavikhove, Beauvoorde, Bleu de Gand, Brood-Kass, Damme, Loo, Oude Postel, Passendaele, Postel, Sezoen, Sint-Maarten, Swalm, Vieux Bruges, Watou, Fromage de Westmalle

    *In (from ?) Wallonia:
Abbaye de Chimay, Abbaye de Floreffe,
Abbaye de Maredsous, Abbaye d'Orval, Abbaye de Val Dieu, Ambiorix, Avesnois à la Trappiste, Bleu de Franchimont, Bouquet des Moines, Caprice de Blanche, Carré de Tourpes, Château d'Arville, Cochon 'nez, Dom Tobias, Fagnar, Fleur des Fagnes, Herve, Madreret, La Maquée (fromage blanc), Paillardin, Pas de Bleu, Père Joseph, Petit Bonsecours, Rubens, Saint-Feuillien, Trou d'Sottai, Val de Salm, Vieil Aubel, Vieux Chimay.
