Choclate

by yashiko

Belgian Choclates are the best. And I even dare to say the best in the world. It's heaven. My friends abroad always ask me to send them more of this delicious stuff. This is something you have to get when you are in Belgium. Easy to take home with you. And I assure you that your friends and family will be pleased to see you again (with a box of pralines). You can buy them from stores like Leonidas or Godiva which are big companies who only make choclates. The often have also shops in other countries. But local stores also sell this. Choclatier is a good profession here so you'll find them easely in every city.My alltime favorite store is Chocolatier Bury in Antwerp. you can buy premade packages of pralines, but you also can pick them out yourself . This way you can choose what you like most. about 15 euro per kilo of pralines.

Handmade Lace

by yashiko

Flanders is famous for it's lace. In Brugge for excample you can find many shops that sell handmade lace. Our lace is very popular among tourists. Japanese people seem to be crazy about it. Most off these shops even have a person who can speak a little bit of Japanese. Nowadays local people don't buy much anymore. But I have to admid that there are sometimes nice works to find. Like a beautiful veil for a wedding dress or so. Good handmade works is something I appriciate much, and that is also for lace.If you like lace you deffinitly should look around in Belgium. Cities like Brugge, Antwerp, Lier and Brussels are know for their beautiful lace. It depend on what you want . But be carefull, the major shops in highly touristic streets might overprice. But also keep in mind that you pay for good handmade things.

+++ several names +++: Speculoos, pain à la grecque

by Norali

In the food section, you already know that beer and chocolate is something you would buy here... of course, if you are fond of them.Other delicacies: cookies like sablés, spéculoos, pain à la Grecque... My favourite shop is Dandoy, near Brussels' Grand-Place. Unfortunately, they don't have any other shop in Belgium (as far as I know). Spéculoos is yummy but my fave is pain à la Grecque... Damn good ! I guess the cookies assortment would be a nice gift for homie.. or dearest colleagues. Whatever ! They are delicious, anyway. The boutique is recognizable at the smell of butter cookies it gives off while wandering Rue au beurre. Entering the shop, you will be greatly surprised by spice odour and this smell of butterbread. I appreciate the display with several piles of cookies, packs. Anywhere else in Belgium, and in case of tighter budget, you can always buy speculoos in supermarkets...

Lace, tapestries, cristal, ...: Just beautiful

by Maeve_81

You can only find local craft in a specialised store... plenty of them in touristic areas. No problem to find them. * Lacetypical belgian, but different in every city... you'll find it in Bruges, Brussels, Mechelen, Lier, ...* Tapestriesone of our top export products until the 16th century* Cristalin Wallonia, most famous is Val Saint-Lambert in Liege It's handmade, so be prepared to pay a lot of euros... but it's worth every cent of it.

Comic books: Nothing childish about...

by Maeve_81

You can get the most popular comic books in every supermarket and bookstore, those are mostly comic books for children. If you're looking for more comics or for adults, look for a specialised comic book store. They aren't wide spread, but you'll find some excellent shops in Brussels (area of the Waversesteenweg - Chaussee de Wavre). Comic books...Tin Tin, The Smurfs, Willy and Wanda, Lucky Luke, Nero, Hercule Poirot, Alex, Blake and Mortimer, Guust Flater, Bob Morane, Harry Dickson, ... Starting from 3 euro.

Beer: Nectar of the gods

by Maeve_81

You can get beer in every supermarket, even in special wrappings.Or in giftstores, specialised shops, ... Beer... one bottle of every kind.. (almost impossible, too much is too much)Start a collection, a good reason to come back to Belgium. Not much, beer is cheap in Belgium. You pay more if you buy it as a gift.

Chocolate: Have to buy lots and lots and lots...

by Maeve_81

You'll find lots of 'chocolateries' (shops who sell chocolate) of Leonidas, Neuhaus, Godiva, ...Also try the little one-man shops or the bakeries.Don't be shy to say what you want, just point out what you want to buy. Chocolate and 'pralines'... lots.... Not much... chocolate is cheap in Belgium... you can get a kilo of pralines for 20 euro.

Wijnegem Shoppingcenter

by Helga67

Outside of Antwerp there is a very huge shopping complex. Besides the many shops, there are also a lot of nice eateries and a care center for children. It's a great place to visit when it is rainy or hot. You can easily spend a whole day here and have a great lunch and/or dinner. The shopping center is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Fridays to 9 p.m.). Closed on Sundays and bank holidays. Almost everything, but especially clothes. Normal prices

What to buy in Belgium ?

by Helga67

The number one thing to buy in Belgium is without doubt the Belgian chocolates, called pralines. But we are also famous for our lace, diamonds (from Antwerp), antique, tapestries and pewter. Antique and flea markets are generally open on Saturdays and Sundays. Regular stores are open Mondays through Saturdays from 10am until 6pm. Recently I heard on the radio that most Belgian products are more expensive than in other countries of the European Community.

Belgian chocolates

by Helga67

The Belgian Chocolate Praline is not to be confused with the American praline. Pralines in Belgium are sublime chocolate confections, the highest achievement of the chocolate maker art: A beautifully sculpted chocolate shell concealing a center of filling explodes with a surprise of texture and flavor in your mouth. Many chocolatiers still make their pralines by hand. Every town and even small villages have chocolate stores with luxurious pralines.Famous Belgian Chocolate:GallerGodivaLeonidasNeuhausBurie
