    The picturesque town of Diksmuide, once the Westhoek's main harbour, owed its wealth to the butter trade. The search for peace is the central theme of the IJzertoren (IJzer Tower). If you climb to the top of this 64-metre high monument and museum of the First World War, you'll get magnificent views of the IJzer plains stretching away to the horizon

    Na de inhuldiging in 1930 werd het idee geopperd om in de toren een crypte als mausoleum in te richten.
    In 1930 en 1937 werden de stoffelijke resten van volgende Vlaamse frontsoldaten in de crypte bijgezet : Renaat De Rudder, Joe English, de gebroeders Van Raemdonck, Frans Van der Linden, Firmin Deprez, Frans Kusters, Bert Willems en Juul De Winde. Ook de Waalse soldaat Amé Fiévez ligt hier samen met de gebroeders Van Raemdonck in één kist begraven. Een grafsteen eert “al wie viel voor Vlaanderen”.

    The present Mechelen Town Hall consists of three distinct parts; the former cloth hall, an exuberant flamboyant palace and a new contemporary construction. The oldest part, a sober Gothic cloth hall with belfry, symbol of civic power, modeled on the one at Bruges, was never finished, because the once so important cloth trade could not raise the necessary funds anymore. The damage caused by the great fire (1342) that swept nearly the whole town, was fortunately rather limited. Throughout the ages this cloth hall has been restored and even altered with the 17th century Baroque elements.
    In the early 16th C when cloth trade was lingering, plans were made to replace the hall by a new palace for the supreme court of law, the Great Council. As the plans drawn by R. Keldermans remained unfinished, this council moved about 1614 into the Court of Savoy, the former palace of Margaret of Austria (the present court house). The works stopped in 1547 and some of this unfinished and neglected site were even sold to local merchants to be used as shop or storage.

    The preservation work done on the Trench of Death makes it difficult to feel the conditions that must have existed at the time. The place is clean, orderly, and reinforced with concrete. Many feel that a visit to Croonart Wood gives a better idea of conditions

    The railway station is only a 15-minute-walk from the centre of the city and the conference site. You can also take a taxi or a bus (in front of the railway station) to the "Fochplein", the centre of the city. There are busses every 10 minutes.

    The site occupied by the Castle of Monceau today was the site of a modest fortress owned by lesser lords up until the 15th century, when the powerful house of Hamal took over the property and developed it more heavily. Over the next three centuries, the building gradually evolved, becoming ever more opulent and residential. 1766 saw the last major remodeling; work since then has focused on restoration and maintenance rather than expansion.

    The Castle of Monceau and its splendid 53 hectare park have been public property since 1936, when they was sold to the state by heirs overburdened by maintenance costs and fractured by divided ownership.

    The skyline of Dinant, a small town cozied up against the Meuse River, is dominated by its two main buildings: the Citadel, which overlooks the town from a 100 meter cliff, and the Cathedral of Notre Dame, outsized against the surrounding structures and capped by a bronze onion dome. The Citadel, built during the Dutch occupation c. 1820, is the second fortress to sit atop the strategic crest -- an earlier fortification was destroyed by the French in 1703.

    A famous native of Dinant is Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone. The Belgian monarch King Albert I perished near Dinant in 1934 when he fell while rock climbing. The commune of Dinant has 13,000 residents, and is 25 kilometers south of the city of Namur.
