Brussel

by tompt

Brussels is founded in the year 979. And worked its way up from a small and meaningless village to the capital of Belgium and the capital of the European Union. The city is known for its beautiful Market Square and ofcourse the statue of Manneken Pis. A statue of a boy urinating in public. The statue is here for centuries. We visited Brussels only once, but had a great time that day with some other VT members.More at our Brussels page.

The Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent

by Paul2001

The Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Gent is one of the most important art museums in all of Belgium. Almost completely dedicated to the artworks of the great Flemish painters, the gallery is a must for anyone who appreciates these brillant artists. Painters such as Rubens, Bosch, Jordaans, and Van Dyk are all represented from what is the Golden Age of Flemish painting. For me Bosch's "Christ Carrying the Cross" was the highlight of my visit. There are also numerous works by the great Belgium artists of the late 19th and 20th centuries such as Ensor, Permeke and Magritte. Other non-Belgium artists are also represented here like Tinteretto and Corot. The gallery also has a collection of Medieval tapestries and numerous sculptures.

Mortsel

by tompt

Mortsel is a city (yes, since a few years it is a city!) next to Antwerp. It is not as famous, and certainly not visited as much. But if you are ever in the neighbourhood, do tour the Fort. The fort was used as an armybase untill several years ago it went into decay and now it is being restored. If you can't get a organised tour do the next best thing and ask diamonddog to show you around. He was serving in this fort when he was enlisted in 1977-78. He can tell great army stories.

Spot the cows (in 2003)

by Norali

From June 21 to Sep 21, cool cows will be seen "grazing" in Brussels streets. Belgium is using the formula, this year.Don't expect milk from them, instead have a view of art in Brussels. "Art on cows" project aims at promoting art and culture within the streets of the city. Each sponsor bought a "virgin" cow, chose the artist he/she wanted to promote. And the artist eventually displays his/her oeuvres (decorated cows) in Brussels streets.185 cows can be spotted. I guess the pleasure is to discover them by chance, like I did at first time. For those who want to locate some of them, have a look at this link. This is what Danielle and I did finally. We took a whole afternoon, walking under the sun, spotting some cows. Tlog will come soon. French and Dutch only. Choose the language you want. When in, click at the 6th icon in the series on top of page.http://www.artoncows.be/You don't have to...

The Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunten Antwerp

by Paul2001

The Koninklijk Museum of Antwerp is one of the most important art museums in the Low Countries. Featured here are the plentiful and quality works of the the great Flemish masters such as Bosch, Van Eyk, Van der Weyden and most importantly the hometown hero, Peter Paul Rubens. The Koninklijk Museum holds the largest collection of Rubens under one roof. The museum is also a good place to have a look at some of the very good 19th and 20th century Belgium artists such as Ensor, Magritte and Permeke. I was unfamiliar with some of these latter group of artists before I came to Belgium and I was quite impressed by a lot of the works.

Antwerp is the second largest city of Belgium with about 500.000 inhabitants and has the second largest harbor of Europe after Rotterdam.Antwerp has a beautiful restored center. I highly recomment to visit the Cathedral Of Our Lady. It offers an elegant tower of 123 meters and four masterpieces by Rubens.

The King's House

by traveldave

The neo-Gothic King's House, or Maison du Roi in French, was one of the guildhalls built on the Grand'Place during the 1400s. Each merchant guild built its own guildhall, or headquarters, there, and adorned it with gilded statues and symbols of its trade. In Dutch, it is called the Broodhuis, or Bread House, indicating that it was the guildhall for the city's bakers. After the mostly wooden guildhalls were destroyed during the French bombardment of 1695, the guilds rebuilt them in more permanent stone. The King's House is inappropriately named, since it was never the seat of royalty.Nowadays, the King's House houses the Brussels City Museum which displays old maps, paintings, and other artifacts relating to the history of Brussels. On the ground floor there is a collection of art, including paintings, wall tapestries, altar pieces, faience, and goldsmith works. The second floor features...
