Ballooning

by Writer007

During my stay in Belgium I really wanted to go for a balloon ride. I had been searching and finally decided to contact Airventure Ballooning. They offer balloon flights in the whole country. I flew along with them near Antwerp and it was a great experience! The basket wasn't too big. We only flew with 6 people. Everything stayed really personal and exclusive! That was very nice. The flight lasted for about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The total flight (including preparations and packing) took about 4 hours. It was a great experience and the people at Airventure Ballooning are really professional. The pilot and crew really knew what they were doin' and they have a 100% saftey record. The owner even has several special shape balloons like a turtle and a strawberry. They speak English very well so no problems there. Only their website is in Dutch but if you don't find what you are looking for you...

Cemetery Schoonselhof - Wilrijk (Antwerp)

by Travel_kat

When you're planning to visit Antwerp, you could spend an hour or 2 at the Cemetery Schoonselhof in Wilrijk, a few kilometers from the center of Antwerp. It is one of the most famous cemeteries in Belgium, with a lot of decorated gravestones situated in a beautiful park.

Bruxelles, Brussel: Brussels, the capital city

by Norali

a city NOT to discover and love in one day.Have been living here for years and still enjoy discovering hidden spots, cool pubs, restaurants, unusual museums, interesting people. I know! An eager traveller should be interested in discovering any place his feet lead him to. Still, I keep on saying that you haven't been to Belgium if you haven't seen Brussels and under-rated cities. Belgium is not only Brugges despite what agencies, tour-operators sell you.Nightlife is for every age and taste. Brussels surroundings offer enough places for outdoor activities (am not talking about city center, obviously...). Really, the city is including more and more of its inhabitants in its projects. Plus, you meet people from every part of the country here. Some of my Brussels: - The Grand-Place with the quaint Hotel de ville;- Mus?e Charlier, an off beat path experience- Les Marolles- Le cercle des...

Antwerp... mmm... Antwerp

by Norali

I nearly discovered this great city in July 2003, though living in Belgium for many years. :) Was there some couple of times but only stuck to common places like the Meir, the Grote markt. It took me some guided tours, the first being in July 2003, to really discover this under-rated city. Special, lively, it has everything: culture, shopping, local customs, food, business. Don't be scared by the reputation of a xenophobic Antwerp. For its port and trading activities, for its centennial design as a crossroads city, Antwerp, imho, is de facto a multi-community area (if not multi-cultural)... Let's give it a try, as I did, and wholeheartedly!- Silence in the secret alleys;- "Beer everything" light meal in a brewery;- Facade of Steiner school;- Small botanical garden and the paintings I saw in October at Elzenveld cultural center;- Laid-back Academie area;- Walks in Antwerp;- Seeing the...

Gand, Gent or Ghent, you pick! For me: exotic!

by Norali

A Greater Ghent area I came to see prior my real visit of the urban Ghent. Usually, I visit the center of the city, the "heart" of an area, then extend to the Greater area. For Ghent, the experience was different. Biking in Greater Ghent was great as well as discovering the city when it's calm, "as usual", in its every-day-life mood. My July 21st in Ghent was exotic. You've got to check my page to know what I mean. Not only this day was dedicated to discover some off beat path spots, I also attended a Latino festival. What an exotic way to celebrate Belgian Independance anniversary.I am bold but I would say that my Ghent page is the best of all of mine. Visit it, I had fun and pleasure writing it, more than any of my pages.I took some time before editing it. I let my impressions and feelings following my visit to Ghent decant. Hence, the spurt of inspiration to build it months later...

Louvain: the friendship city

by Norali

OK... Some pre-VT days in Louvain (Leuven in its initial Flemish name) visiting the city in a car then a VT-era visit of one day don't make me a specialist of this university city. Right? But I'll try to convey my memories, tell about some of my activities there.Page is fit to be seen, you may click here to have a general view or see some pics.Leuven:- The town where lies the "oldest Catholic University of nowadays" in the then "Low countries" area... Don't see what I mean? Click here;- One of my nice surprises and memories of Leuven was at the City hall: a sculpture of Meunier, "Le semeur".. some chidhood memories brought back;- whose city hall is a place of my first "wedding ceremony". In the Off beat path section, a pic of one of my activities there: my wedding with a VTer... :)- One reason, among others, in applying for an exchange program with Leuven University is the possibility to...

Brussels

by Helga67

Brussels is not only the capital of Belgium but also the centre of the European Union. It's a city of modern archtecture with a lot of financial, industrial and business activities but also a green city with centuries-old architecture.Don't miss the Grand Place. This historic market square with its splendid guild houses and the impressive Gothic beauty of the Town Hall, is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful town squares in Europe. Say hi to our famous little peeing boy, "Manneken Pis" and wander around in the streets around the Grand Place to taste the atmosphere. If you have enough time, do visit the Atomium, one of our landmarks, a remainder of Expo '58.

Bruges

by Helga67

Bruges is the most beautiful medieval town of Flanders. It is often called "Venice of the North" because of its little canals. It's very touristy, but nevertheless a place you should visit when coming to Belgium.Make a boat trip along the canals, and stroll along the narrow streets making discoveries at every turn. Visit the beguinage and relax at the Lake of Love.
