Antwerpen

by Helga67

Antwerp is a city close to my heart. I don't understand why so many tourists never take the opportunity to visit this cosmopolitan city, because I can assure you there is a lot to see. Tourists that do come to Antwerp (very often by accident) are all astonished by its beauty. Discover for yourself this bustling, artistic and cultural city with a typical atmosphere of a port: cosmopolitan, slightly exotic and at the same time so hospitable. You'll feel at home straight away, since life is good in the city and your hosts, the Antwerp 'Signors', still have a strong Burgundian feel for high living.

Damme

by Helga67

Damme is a quaint little village not far from Bruges and a nice day out when staying in Bruges.Do visit Damme by taking a boat or by cycling along the canal. The town is famous for its good and many restaurants and bookshops. It has a lovely main square with a beautiful town hall, and a church with a special tower that you will notice from far away.

Leuven

by Helga67

Leuven is the capital of the province of Flemish-Brabant and is situated at about 20 Km east of Brussels. It is best known for its internationally renowned University and splendid architecture.Don't miss the town hall - it's quite impressive - the university library, the big beguinage and the cosy alleys around the two main squares: Oude Markt and Grote Markt.

Hasselt

by Helga67

Hasselt is a paradise for shoppers. It's known around the world for its extensive and exclusive fashions. But there is more ...Hasselt has a large number of places of interest, places that are worth visiting like the Jenever museum, Japanese garden, fashion museum ... and all around Hasselt you will find works of art.

Knokke-Heist

by Helga67

Knokke-Heist is considered to be the most exclusive beach town in Belgium, primarily because of 'Knokke-Zoute', an area of splendid villas where the Belgian jet-set feels at home. It's a shopping heaven with exclusive shops. There is a broad promenade for showing off and being seen. Than there is also "'t Zwin", a nature reservate, the yearly international fireworkfestival, a butterfly garden, a yearly cartoon festival ... just a wonderful place to hang out.

Lier

by Helga67

Lier is a charming little town at the junction of the Greater and Lesser Nete. It is still unspoiled by mass tourism and a great day out when staying in the neighbouring city of Antwerp.Explore the Market Square with the beautiful old houses, walk along the river Nete in town or on the town wall, visit the peaceful beguinage and the beautiful Zimmer tower with its astronomical clock.

Leuven

by ant1606

Capital of the Flemish Brabant region, Leuven is a city of moderate size but capable of leaving any visitor speechless for the beauty of its small downtown area.Above all emerges the elaborate City Hall with its intricate Gothic patterns resembling, from a distance, candy and fairy-tale substance. The intriguing cleanliness of the long, elegant Oude Markt (Old Market) deserves contemplation from the table of one of the many cafes that fill the square.Among other places of interest, the southern part of the city hosts the Groot Begijnhof van Leuven (Grand Béguinage of Leuven). It's a complex originated during the XIII century across the river Dijle to provide housing to a community of unmarried women. This is a UNESCO site listed along with other Beguinages in the Flanders.Lively place mostly due to a young population of students attending the oldest Catholic University in the world.

Weather forecast.

by breughel

On the VT travel forum a repeated question is that of the weather to be expected on a planned trip.In Belgium, with an Atlantic climate, vacations are often spoiled by rain. For BELGIUM I use www.meteo.be (in 4 languages encl. English) from the Institut Royal Météorologique. I also use the weather forecast from the Belgian (francophone) television www.rtbf.be/meteo (in French). Good at short term. Not reliable at more than 3 days. The weather is so changing in Belgium that nobody is able to tell you if it will rain the day after tomorrow or not. So never visit Belgium without taking your umbrella. You might leave your hotel in the morning with sunshine and get rain in the afternoon!

FORT EBEN EMAEL

by mtncorg

Built as one the new forts of the post-WWI Position Fortifiee Liege, Eben Emael was established to better cover the northern approaches to the city of Liege. It was also built to dominate the bridges of the newly built – 1930 – Albert Canal which runs from Liege to Antwerp. The fort was built to withstand heavier artillery fire than the old forts around Liege which did not stand up to the 380 mm and 420 mm guns employed by the Germans. Many considered Fort Eben Emael as the strongest fortified position within Europe at the time of the onset of WWII. The fort remains within the jurisdiction of the Belgian Army today, but since 1988, guided tours take place within the fort on one weekend a month – see the website for more information about times and costs. For much more, see my Eben Emael tips.

ABBEY NOTRE DAME DE SCOURMONT

by mtncorg

Cistercian monks from Westvleteren Abbey in West Flanders made their way to the Scourmont Plateau south of the town of Chimay near the French border in 1850 establishing a priory. Developing a farm, cheese factory and a brewery the priory was elevated to abbey status in 1871 – though the present church dates back to only 1950. You can visit the chapel – the monastery is off limits. Most people who come here, come for the beer that the monks produce – Chimay Beer – which is one of the seven official Trappist beers. You can buy and imbibe this product at the nearby Auberge de Potaupre.
