Dinant -

by speed4turtles

The skyline of Dinant, a small town cozied up against the Meuse River, is dominated by its two main buildings: the Citadel, which overlooks the town from a 100 meter cliff, and the Cathedral of Notre Dame, outsized against the surrounding structures and capped by a bronze onion dome. The Citadel, built during the Dutch occupation c. 1820, is the second fortress to sit atop the strategic crest -- an earlier fortification was destroyed by the French in 1703. A famous native of Dinant is Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone. The Belgian monarch King Albert I perished near Dinant in 1934 when he fell while rock climbing. The commune of Dinant has 13,000 residents, and is 25 kilometers south of the city of Namu yahoo yahoo

Dinant - Fortress and church

by speed4turtles

This valley, where tourism developed very early on, shelters the charming city of Dinant, a land of trade and legends.Dinant is the only city to have given its name to a craft, "dinanderie", which is the art of working in copper.Adolphe Sax, the famous instrument maker and inventor of, among other things, the saxophone, was born in Dinant in 1814.Bouvignes, the former rival of Dinant, is one of the rare villages which has kept its patchwork of medieval alleyways.Dinant, one of the leading cities in the Belgian Ardennes, is situated amongst huge rocks along the river Meuse. This fortified small city has a very rich history and a folkloric scene. It is very popular for its boat trips on the river Meuse and its famous caves... yahoo yahoo

Liege - The Fragnee bridge

by speed4turtles

Liege, daughter of the Meuse river. Liege is called 'La cite ardente' (the fiery city). A city at the crossroads of Northern and Southern European culture. Liege is an old industrial center which faces the challenge of adapting to the 21st century.Nowadays Liege is a rapidly changing city where old meets new. Take a walk through the old city center and discover the typical traffic-free alleys and shopping streets where terraces abound. Visit the central St. Lambert square where a new modern Liege is growing. Take a walk alongside the banks of the majestically flowing Meuse river and see Liege from a distance. yahoo yahoo

Huy - Our lady of Sartre church

by speed4turtles

Huy is located where the Hoyoux river flows into the Meuse, halfway between Liege and Namur. Like many strategically located towns in Belgium, Huy has been continually besieged throughout its history; it suffered great damage in the 17th century from the French under Louis XIV. The Citadel (built by the Dutch and used by the Nazis as a detention center) and the Collegiate Church of Notre Dame, next-door-neighbors to each other at the edge of the Meuse, are the town's two main sights.Huy has a population of 19,000. Ben-Ahin and Tihange are boroughs within the municipal district of Huy. yahoo yahoo

Urban Cows in Brussels

by GypsyBessie

We spent one day in Brussels and were guided around for a few hours by a local guide by the name of Pierre who was wonderful but I think it would be a good idea to be able to tour the city just to view all the urban cows on display and so beautifully decorated. They seem to be everywhere but I am not quite sure how many there are altogether. I can't believe I only managed to take a picture of one of them but every time I tried to use my camera to take a picture someone got in the way.

Cruising around Bruges

by GypsyBessie

I am sure many tourists in Bruges must do this but cruising along the canals around Bruges is a must. There are several joining points and the charge is around 3.50 euros for around half an hour. We were fortunate enough to do this on a beautiful sunny day and so I took lots of pictures. The "captain/driver" of the boat tries to seat as many people as possible but even so it is quite pleasant. There is lots to see in the half hour which you probably wouldn't have been able to do if you were walking so if your time in the town is restricted then this is ideal. The "driver/guide" did give us lots of information but I was so fascinated with the scenery and taking pictures I did not concentrate very well on what he was sayingHe did hint at giving a tip for a "poor student" so we gave him enough to buy a beer or two.

Gent

by Sjalen

If I would have moved to Belgium today, I would have lived in Gent or Leuven. Gent is a lovely student city which gives you loads of good pubs to choose from in an already good beer country and it has the best "frites" I have had in Belgium but there is so much more as this is one of Europe's old medieval cities with so much good architecture it can make your head spin. Lastly, it has the Gentse Festen, a bit of an all day street festival with music, food and all other things you asociate with fun. Definately a good base in Flanders if you want to make daytrips and still stay in a great city.

Zillebeke - Hill 60

by speed4turtles

All through the fighting, Ypres was heavily bombed. In April 1915, the German Army managed to push the allied front back to the western bank of the river. For the first time, chemical weapons were used here by the Germans (gas, a.k.a. Iperite) against the French and the Canadian Armies. The Allied Front withstood the attacks and the Germans were pushed back over the canal. In the middle and in the south of the battle field fierce fighting took place between 1914 and 1918 around some very strategic hills : Hill 60, Hill 62 and the hill range near Mesen. This is where the allied troupes started (under heavy and continuous rains) to reconquer the entire western part of Ypres. On November the 6th the village of Passendale was regained. In April 1918, the German Army launched an ultimate attack by occupying the Kemmel Mountain west of Ypres. In May the first American troops landed in France...
