HENRI-CHAPELLE AMERICAN MILITARY CEMETERY

by mtncorg

Lying atop a ridge about two miles north of the village of Henri-Chapelle is the Henri-Chapelle American Military Cemetery, one of three such in Belgium. The view to the west over the Berwinne Valley is especially beautiful as you approach the cemetery. Most of the men buried here died in the fighting that took place in the Battles of the Bulge and the Hurtigen Forest and there are 7989 individual graves – 94 whom are Unknowns. Another 450 names of men who went missing in this area are inscribed on the walls of the Memorial. You walk through the Memorial to reach the graves beyond. Contained within the Memorial are a chapel at one end and a visitor center/museum at the other end both connected by a colonnade made up of 24 pillars upon which are the State symbols for each of the States of the United States. In the museum, there are large mosaic maps showing American military actions in...

SIGNAL DE BOTRANGE

by mtncorg

Atop the plateau of the Hautes Fagnes lies the Signal de Botrange which at 694 meters/2277 feet is Belgium’s highest point. There is a stone tower – built in 1934 – reaching up to 718 meters across the parking lot from the high point. Atop the actual summit is a six-meter high earthen pyramid with steps that take you up to the magical 700 meter level. The pyramid is known as the Baltia Tower after Herman Baltia, the Belgian military officer who served as the Royal Commissioner for the East Cantons following WWI. On his watch the not-so-secret ballot was organized in order for the citizens of the East Cantons to welcome Belgian suzerainty.

HAUTES FAGNES

by mtncorg

HAUTES FAGNESThe Hautes Fagnes is an upland plateau of forests and moorland that extend from the eastern area of the province of Liege into the Germany area of the Hohe Venn, contiguous with the Eifel region. It is a wet region creating the swampy conditions in the moorland. The area is popular with hikers in the summer and skiers in the heart of the winter. This area used to belong to Prussia who was awarded the area following the 1815 Treaty of Vienna. Many of the people spoke French which led Prussian King Frederick William IV to say during an 1856 visit to Malmedy, “I am proud to have in my kingdom a little country where people speak French.” Following the end of WWI, the area – known as the East Cantons – was given to Belgium. A not-so-secret ballot plebiscite gave the Belgians the right to remain. The area was reunited briefly to Germany in 1940 as ‘Alt Belgia” – and like in...

3RD FRENCH COLONIAL DIVISION MONUMENT

by mtncorg

Erected in 1927, the monument lists 4083 dying on 22 August 1914 with another 2379 going missing. The casualty figures show atrocious casualty rates – 70% for the 7th Regiment which fought at St Vincent to the south of Rossignol. The 3rd Colonial Division is thought to have lost some 10,500 men – over 6,000 dead and the rest wounded or prisoner and most of the prisoners were wounded, as well. The 2nd Colonial Division lost another 777 casualties trying to help out. The Colonial Corps, one of the more elite units within the French Army, would go on to lose plenty more men during the war, but nothing like 22 August, 1914. That day was a testament to both the heroism of the French soldier and the superior training and tactics on the part of the German Army. French cemeteries further south at Virton and Esche/Bled are further testament to the fact that 22 August was a very grim day for the...

FRENCH CEMETERIES – BOIS DE ROSSIGNOL

by mtncorg

As horrible as trench warfare would prove to be, more Frenchmen would die – 400,000 – in the initial mobile phases of WWI. Here in the Ardennes, you find evidence of some of the heaviest casualties. By pre-war agreement with the Russians, the French had agreed to undertake an offensive within 15 days of the start of hostilities. This agreement would put both the Russians and the French under the proverbial bus. As the German invasion of Belgium through Liege unfolded, French commander Josef Joffre saw what he thought as a chance to cut off the German right wing by a thrust through the Ardennes at the German center. The French miscalculated the number of German troops available – they didn’t think the Germans could use their reserve units as frontline troops. Thinking they outnumbered the Germans, the French Third and Fourth Armies moved up into southeast Belgium. In a series of meeting...

Our Lady's Cathedral, Antwerp

by hopang

Our Lady's Cathedral is located near the Central Railway Station in the heart of the city of Antwerp. It was constructed in the middle of the 14th century and was consecrated in 1521. The Roman Catholic cathedral was designed by Jan & Pieter Appelmans. The Cathedral is approximately 120 meters long and 75 meters wide. At 123 meters high, it is the tallest tower in the city of Antwerp. The Cathedral of Our Lady was listed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. It is certainly one of the prominent landmarks in the city of Antwerp! Don't miss the lovely Our Lady's Cathedral when you visit Antwerp on your vacation!

Visit Brugge

by Robmj

Brugge is a "wow", its historic old town is a stunning medieval town and on a grand scale. It is littered with massive church's, towers, squares, narrow cobbled streets and alleys and marvellous buildings. It also has a series of water canals and old city walls. You can spend days here soaking in the atmosphere and of course, drinking the sensational Belgium beers. I found bars that literally sold a hundred different types. The main Brugge square is a very lively affair with loads of cafes and bars and when we were there, people everywhere. Brugge is a UNESCO world heritage site and many attractions. Just wander around, you'll find them all.A great place to visit.

Antwerp's Architecture

by DueSer

Antwerp has some really neat buildings and I don't mean gothic architecture here. I'm talking about truly unique houses, convention centers, government buildings, etc. The roof of one building looks like a school of sharks, their silver fins sticking out of the ocean visible from miles around. Another looks like a boat docked inside the building during an unusually high tide. Don't be afraid to stray off the main streets to discover some of these gems.

Gent's Statues

by DueSer

Gent is probably best known for its "Three Towers," which if you stand on the bridge by St. Michael's Church, you see the towers lined up for you. What I recommend is not just admiring these places from afar. Besides the towers, they have some fantastic sculpture on the grounds of those churches that either make up the towers or are near the buildings that are part of the three towers.

Sunday Mornings in Bruges

by DueSer

Most people, it seems, spend Saturday night in Bruges drinking until they lose consciousness. If you are not one of those people, I'd like to suggest getting up early on Sunday morning and walking around town while all the people who were up late Saturday night are still asleep. This is a wonderful time to wander the city and enjoy the beauty of it. Birds are out skimming along the canals, cats hurry down side streets, and it seems the whole town is there for you alone. I often recommend getting lost in a city or town because I believe getting off the main avenues and out of the tourist areas is when you really get to know a place. I don't quite recommend that this time, however. On a Sunday morning in Bruges, the place to be is on the canals. Stop on briges to peer as far as you can down the waterways. The weeping willows, the swans, the flowers - it's all truly beautiful.Do be careful...
