Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk

by DueSer

This is by far my favorite church in Belgium. It's beautiful inside and out and has a lot to offer besides the usual church architecture. One of those things is an original Michaelangelo sculpture of Mary and the baby Jesus. You don't see a lot of his work outside of Italy & France and this is a very sweet piece. The most interesting thing, by far, though, is the excavated grave paintings from the 12th and 13th centuries. They were discovered in 1979 when some graves were being moved. Most of the paintings have a religious theme but there are a lot of flowers, stars, birds, and other ornamental designs as well. The most amazing part is they believe they were painted free hand.

CBBD - Bruxelles

by DueSer

Located in a 1906 Victor Horta art nouveau building, the Belgian Comic Museum (or CBBD in French, for short) is a fun trip for kids and adults. Giant smurfs welcome the kids into this beautiful building while the adults are all looking up at the stained glass ceiling. The architecture in this place is stunning but learning the history of comics is fun as well. The Belgians take their comics business very seriously and the history of it is long.A lot of the strips they so proudly display aren't known at all in the U.S. but everyone knows the smurfs, which warrant a small section of their own, as does Tintin. Tintin's adventures aren't quite as well known in the U.S. but if you've ever tried to learn French, Tintin may have helped you, like he helped me.There's also a nice section of the museum devoted to the up and coming comic authors. Some are fantastic. It's a real treat to get a...

Get Lost in Bruxelles

by DueSer

It's not a hard thing to do, getting lost in this big city, but it can be fun. I recommend this a lot if the city has many unique buildings and Bruxelles definitely does. The area I liked best was between avenue Louise and the Grote Markt. The streets of this area are filled with beautiful architecture, lovely colors, and shops that have been around since Shakespearean times. I had fun just wandering around getting pictures of places like the ad for the Minet Bros. painted on the side of a building (on my introduction to Belgium page) or this fella holding up a small balcony. Also in this area, check out the view from the terrace adjacent to the Palais de Justice. From up there you can see across the entire city with church domes (and giant silver molecules:-)) sticking up above the houses and shops.

MARDASSON

by mtncorg

In Belgium, the British have their battlefields at Ypres, Paeschendaele and Waterloo. For Americans, it is here at Bastogne. Just outside of town to the east, atop a small hill is the star-shaped Mardasson Monument. The Battle of the Bulge took place over the course of a month from mid December, 1944, to mid January, 1945. The Germans launched 24 divisions - 10 armored - against a formerly quiet Ardennes front on December 16. The panzers slowly gained ground, in some areas achieving much better success than in other areas. St Vith, about 40 km northeast of Bastogne, fell on the 19th of December, but valuable time was gained delaying its fall so reinforcements could be rushed to the front. German forces reached almost to the Meuse, but the defense of Bastogne - 18,000 men of the 101st Airborne slowed the panzers. Gen. Patton's Third Army attacked northward through the Belgian province of...

A visit for the day or weekend to Brugge :)

by budapest8

Just an hour trip by train from Brussels Midi Station, with trains leaving every half an hour. The main station is also a stop for the Thalys train Paris–Brussels–Ostend.Bus links to the centre are frequent, though the railway station is just a 10 minute walk from the main shopping streets and a 20 minute walk from the Market Square.Plans for a north–south light rail connection through Bruges, from Zeebrugge to Lichtervelde, and a light rail connection between Bruges and Ostend are under construction.Brugge in Dutch or Bruges in French is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is located in the northwest of the country. The historic city center is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO. It is oval-shaped and about 430 hectares in size. The area of the whole city amounts to more than 13,840 hectares, including 193.7 hectares off...

Take a day trip to the seaside

by budapest8

If your staying in Brussels between Springtime and Autumn,I recommend a trip to the seaside to the town of Oostende,or Ostend as we say in English. The trip takes about 1Hr 15 mins, and trains leave every half an hour except late in the evening.Trains go from Gare de Midi in Brussels. The Oostende trainstation is right on the sea front, back from the days when thereused to go passenger boat trains over to England. I was able totake a train from many European destinations direct to Oostende, sadly it now takes 3 or 4 changes when traveling from CentralEurope or Southern or Northern Europe. Now there are no passenger ferries, catamarans or Jet boats taking foot passengersacroos the channel, just Ro Ro (Roll on Roll of) car ferries, one hasto go to Calais these days.Oostende is the perfect pace to stroll along the sea front and go for a paddle onone of the 2 large beaches. There are lots of...

Best places to visit in Belgium apart from Bruges

by petwouters

For those of you who are thinking of visiting Bruges - may I suggest you do visit this place (great little place and super easy to get around) but that you extend your holiday in Belgium to visit another few places? From Bruges (or Brugge in Dutch), you can easily visit some other places that are really worthwhile: Damme is very, very beautiful for instance.Other places: all the seaside villages and cities - De Panne, Oostende, Knokke,... they all have their own special atmosphere.Visit the huge dune park called 'Zwin' for lots of walks and wildlife spotting. Beautiful! All these places are within about 30-40 minutes drive from Bruges.Staying longer in Belgium/Flanders? Have a think about travelling from Bruges to Gent and visit that city too, then continue on to Antwerp. Antwerp is often forgotten on international tourists' itineraries and that's a real shame because it really is a...

The coast area in W-Flanders

by Luchonda

Damme, near BrugesDue to it's rich history and many things worth seeing, Damme is nowadays a popular touristic center. Popular, but fortunately not too crowdy. Till far over our borders, Damme is renowned for it's cuisine and since a few years it is also known as a place where you can buy lots of old (and new) books. Charles De Coster - born in Munich in 1827, was a pioneer in the french/belgian literature by the Legend of Tyl Uylenspieghel and his friend "Lamme Goedzak" written in 1868 and translated in many countries ! He died in Brussels in 1879 as a rather unknown "ecrivain"Damme itself is a nice small town near Brugge in the West Flanders fields - Perfect for relaxing - walking or biking tours you can rent localy !Lissewege : another gem at the belgian coast area (pic3)Damme in winter time 2008 - an exeptional experience.(pic 4)

Tour the historic battlefields of the Great War

by Besties

While on a weekend break to Bruges, we decided to take the "Flanders Fields" bus tour, run by Quasimodo Tours. It cost us €55 each and was well worth the money. The tour is a full day: we left Bruges at 9.15 am and got back around 5.30 pm. It's a packed day with many stops and they can even tailor it a little on the day to provide something for everyone. Transport was a comfortable mini bus and there were about a dozen people (of all ages) on our trip.Flanders is the site of many long and famous battles of WW1. We visited many battlefields, landmarks and memorials along the way, stopping at a small museum for lunch and ending up in Ypres and the Menin Gate. The tour is run by Sharon and Philippe; Phillipe took our tour and was an excellent guide and host. He is obviously very knowledgeable and hardly stopped talking all day! He is also very approachable and friendly. For us, this was a...
