I had a good fun sitting on a restaurant street table in Petite Rue des Bouchers, just by the Grand Place. It is a narrow street with plenty of restaurants on both sides. As it was a Monday evening the place was not so packed up so all waiters were standing outside trying to call the tourists in. These people are real fun, they don’t let any passer by through without recommending their food but the way they address people is never aggressive or rude. What's astonishing is that they can spot out immediately the nationality of the tourists and speak their language! I think I heard them speaking and telling jokes in a dozen of different languages. No wonder this is the European capital!
My husband, son and I lived in Belgium for five years (from 2003-2008). Belgium is a small country located between France and the Netherlands, boarding Luxemburg and Germany. I find that Belgium is in the heart of Europe because travelling from Belgium is very convenient. Although the weather is not always the best (a lot of rain and cold wind) the locals, culture and the food make up for it. A small airline called Ryanair located right outside of Charleroi (a small airport about 10 Minutes south of Brussels) flys almost anywhere in Europe for sometimes less than $50 (one way). We flew with Ryanair to Austria and Italy and had a great experience. I felt the safest in this airline - its basically like taking the bus. No assigned seats, no waiting, no calls. The airline flys on time - if you are late - sorry!Okay, now to Belgium. There is a lot to do in this little country. To the north is...

The former Province of Brabant, with capital in Brussels, was divided in three entities in 1995, pursuant to the never-ending linguistic disputes between Flemish and Walloons. The newly created Province of the Walloon Brabant, with capital in Wavre, comprises the southern urban periphery of Brussels, from which it is separated by a narrow corridor belonging to the Flemish Brabant. In terms of area, it is the smallest province in Belgium (about the size of the Island of Martinique) and, therefore, does not really have a large wealth of attractions. However, some interesting sites such as the imposing Romanesque collegiate church of Saint Gertrude in Nivelles (second picture), and the enchanting ruins of the Villers-la-Ville Abbey can be easily explored as daytrips from Brussels. But the major attraction in the Waloon Brabant is obviously the Waterloo Battlefield (first picture), also...

The city of Brussels (including the 19 municipalities of the urban agglomeration) is a separate entity within Belgium, with the same status as the other two regions which make up the Belgian Federal State - Flanders and Wallonia - and with its own Parliament and Government. This schizophrenic city has multiple souls: it is provincial but cosmopolitan, passionate but phlegmatic; Paradoxical in one word. It is difficult to fall in love at first sight with Brussels and, however, very few people give it but the chance of spending there a short time around the Grand Place and other famous landmarks. It therefore falls into the category of love-it-or-hate-it cities. True, there are some grimy areas even in the historic district; there are examples of urban planning (or lack thereof) that make post-Soviet towns look radiant; and, above all, the cleanliness standards are about the same as in...

West Flanders is the westernmost province in Belgium and the only one with a coast on the North Sea. The coast, lined with fine sandy beaches is almost completely built up with appartment complexes of questionable taste and, partly with villas. A tram line runs the length of the coast (about 60 km from the French border to the Dutch border). In spite of the lack of sun and the not so inviting waters of the North Sea, the coast is usually very crowded in Summer with Belgian holiday-makers. And so is Brugge, the provincial capital, with international tourists, all year round. But the province is still full of tranquil little-known places waiting to be discovered. Feel free to browse these pages for more pictures and tips.

The Province of Luxembourg is located in the very South of Belgium, bordering the Grand-Duchy of Luxemburg, France and the Provinces of Liège and Namur. It is the largest but least populated of all the Belgian provinces. It is therefore the least urban of them all and the one which offers some of the best hiking opportunities in the Belgian Ardennes, a hilly and heavily forested area with some of the best scenery in the Low Countries. The capital, Arlon, is small and with not a lot of attractions for the tourist, but there are a number of historic little towns waiting to be discovered in the river valleys that criss cross the region. Historically, this province made part of the Grand-Duchy of Luxemburg, from which it was separated in 1839 to become part of Belgium, based on linguistic reasons.

The Province of Antwerp is the most populated and industrialised in Flanders, and Belgium for the same matter. Historically, it made part of the Duchy of Brabant, one of the most important regions in the Low Countries and which today is divided between the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Pronvince of North Brabant) and Belgium (Provinces of Antwerp, Flemish and Wallon Brabant and Region of Brussels).Apart from the obvious attractions of Belgium's main port and economic hub, the province hosts several cities and towns of interest, including Mechelen, Lier and Turnhout.

The Duchy of Brabant was a historical region in the Low Countries which included the two present Brabant provinces in Belgium, the current Region of Brussels, the current province of Antwerp plus the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands. After the independence of Belgium, Brabant became one of the nine provinces of the new country, with its capital in Brussels. It was an odd province, as it was the only one which straddled between Flanders and Wallonia, comprising the officially bilingual capital of the country. In 1995, the coexistence of the two linguistic communities in the same province proved to be impossible and an institutional reform led to the federalization of Belgium and to the splitting of the province in two parts: the Flemish and the Walloon Brabants, plus the separation of Brussels as a new federal entity. Since then, the capital of the Flemish Brabant has been set...

The Easternmost province in Belgium bears the name of Wallonia's largest city (although its capital is smaller Namur). The province of Liege is crossed by the river Meuse and the landscape features rolling hills and agricultural fields, which make it look rather differently from the boring flat provinces to the West and North. The province of Liege also includes the German-speaking community of Belgium in a few municipalities located near the border to Germany, including Eupen and Sankt Vith.Check out my Province of Liege pages for more pictures and tips.
