Bergen (Mons) - Belfry

by speed4turtles

We arrived at the foot of the Belfry, which is a good example of the Mons's baroque style (XVIIth century). This stoned tower is 87 metres high. It overlook the city and give to Mons its particular silhouette. It contains, into the top, a 49 bells carillon. Victor Hugo described it as: "a coffepot flanked over four smaller teapots".

Bergen (Mons) - One side of st Waudru

by speed4turtles

You haven't seen Mons before you have visited its jewel of religious architecture: the Sainte-Waudru Collegiate Church.During the VIIth century, Lady Waudru settled in, on the hill which becomed Mons. A small community gave birth to a chapter of canonesses. To pay tribute to its founder, the chapter erected in 1449 a somptuous church. The construction of this notable gothic building is spread over two centuries. However, the architects used only one plan; this explain the exceptional unity of the monument

Bergen (Mons) - Townhall

by speed4turtles

The gothic City Hall: the main frontage achieved between 1458 and 1477. The monument alone deserves to be seen.On the right side we see the House of the Golden Fleece which houses the Tourism's Office. On the left side, the main gate. The most famous and mischievous inhabitant of Mons wishes you welcome: It's the Guard'sMonkey. He met many famous people and he was the witness to many events! The statuette of wrought iron dates from the Middle Age and has allways kept its origins secrets. Only today, we don't know if it was made for a tavern, for a child or anything else ... But it doesn't matter as the inhabitant does, don't fail to pet the Monkey with your left hand, I've heard that it brings good luck.

Let's go first into the heart of the City, on the main square, one of the most beautifull of Belgium. Without any competition with Brussel's, the Place of Mons gives us an overview of the civil architecture of the town between the XVth and the XXth century.

Aalst st Jozefs church

by speed4turtles
