by sabsi When you are going to a place in Belgium check for its French and its Dutch name before you are going or you might get lost, e.g. on the motorway the name of a place on the signs change from the Dutch name to the French name and vice versa as soon as you are on Dutch/French speaking grounds. For example in the French speaking part of Belgium signs to Antwerp say 'Anvers', the change to 'Antwerpen' as soon as you get to a Dutch speaking area. 5 minutes later it might be 'Anvers' again... Very confusing if you don't know what the cities' names are... Leave a Comment

One thing I can surely recommend is staying clear of the Belgian seaside. Don't go there! Check out the weather before you might want to head for the beach and cancel your trip when a they say it's going to be a great day and b it's somewhere between May and September. Hoards of Belgian and German tourists heading for the same stretch of sand are a health risk you should avoid when possible. No, I'm kidding. A bit. The sealine is not one of my favorite places because there are highrise (6 storey) buildings right along the beach. But do cross the border with Holland, go to the beach there! There are wide beaches, dunes, birds, seals (sometimes) - what more can you want? Leave a Comment

by peteyjim The Manneken Pis is just one of those things you have to see. There is also a museum displaying all the costumes he's been dressed in over the years! Leave a Comment

- The drinking age is 18 years old, but nobody really cares… All you have to take care of is, while driving, the maximum blood alcohol level = 0.5g/l (2 beers/ glasses of wine)... - VAT and service charge are included in all rates and prices (unless clearly mentioned), but tipping in restaurants or in taxi’s is a clear way to show you have appreciated the service… - Electricity is A.C. 220 volts - 50 cycles. Plugs are of the round 2-pin type… You can find those in any airport... or decide not shaving while in Belgium - Regular stores are open Mondays through Saturdays from 10am until 6pm; should you need stg on Sundays, just go for a market (e.g. the “Gare du Midi” market) Talking about shopping, the best Belgian chocolates to find are -as far as I am concerned- Corne Port Royal and Godiva (both in the immediate surroundings of the Grand Place)... - Avoid the surroundings of 'Gare du Midi' and 'Gare du Nord' at night. Should you be bothered by whoever, just adopt an friendly but assertive attitude, and use humor... - Do not give money to begging/ homeless people. They use it for drinking (most of the time). If you want to help them, buy a sandwich or fruits and give them that... Leave a Comment

As there is no VN embassy in Jordan, I decided to pick-up the visa in Brussels. The consular section of the VN embassy in Brussels in only open on Mon, Wed and Fri from 14.00 till 16.00 !!!! The price for a visa is one month one entry 62 Euros (approx 80 USD). If you want a three months multiple entry, the price is 124 Euros. The time needed to get your visa approuval is one week. You need it sooner, you have to add an extra 25 euros. So imagine if you need a same day multiple entry tourist visa, it will cost you 149 Euros, cash only. I believe it is a ripp-off for a country who wants to catch up a part tourist traveling in SE Asia.
Just buy your visa somewhere else, in Bangkok for example ! Leave a Comment

Belgium really has got a great social welfare system. Surely a few people will slip trough, but most of those beggars (you know, women with little children) are supported by our government. Leave a Comment

Brugge is reliant on tourists, so be prepared to pay over the top for anything. Leave a Comment

Do not have confidence in the weather predictions : in Belgium the weather can change in a second, the temperature rises and falls, the sun continuously plays seek and hide, and rain just might fall on your head while your neighbour stays dry ! Leave a Comment

Just don't even think of it. Even if everyone else recommends it, don't! It's nasty: waiters and maitre-d's of the restaurants here almost try to drag you into their place to have some food. It's like a Tunisian market! Plus: often the food isn't up to much.
If you do want to go, look out for a restaurant that doesn't use staff to convince you to come in. For example: Aux Armes de Bruxelles is highly recommended, although a bit pricier. I always enjoy eating there. The personnel is dressed to impress, the food is excellent. http://www.armesdebruxelles.be/ (Check out the guest book) Leave a Comment
