In Brussels, even if it is a glittering area, avoid the restaurants in the 'Petite rue des Bouchers'.You have hundreds of other places which are nicer and quite more 'Belgian'.Here is a picture of a very good place to have a coffee on the Grand Place (no tourist trap, this time! Café Jacqmotte)

Try to avoid the restaurants in the main square in Bruges. Instead, try one of the back alley places. I found an amazing Italian restaurant willing to stay open late to feed me! And the prices were MUCH more reasonable.

by fed-up

The Atomium is a total tourist trap.Go to see it from the outside and get your photo taken in front of it - but it is full of junk inside. It is OK for the views from the top but if it is raining (it was when I was there) you can see sweet FA.

by reon80

I know some people are going to disagree with this, but I thought Brugge was just one big tourist trap! This medieval city would be neat if it wasn't for the massive amounts of people that tramp through it every day and ruin the atmosphere. Of course, I am one of these guilty people, so I don't quite know how this could be fixed:) As an alternative, I recommend going to one of the other small towns in this great country and seeing Belgium without the tourists!

Butcher Street lives up to its name...you will be butchered! Nah, just kidding, or am I? Anyway, this street is lined by restaurants and the food is great, but I think one can find cheaper food somewhere...but of course, I've come home and claimed to have eaten at this particular street in the lovely city of Brussels!

by daniel.braun

- The drinking age is 18 years old, but nobody really cares… All you have to take care of is, while driving, the maximum blood alcohol level = 0.5g/l (2 beers/ glasses of wine)...- VAT and service charge are included in all rates and prices (unless clearly mentioned), but tipping in restaurants or in taxi’s is a clear way to show you have appreciated the service…- Electricity is A.C. 220 volts - 50 cycles. Plugs are of the round 2-pin type… You can find those in any airport... or decide not shaving while in Belgium- Regular stores are open Mondays through Saturdays from 10am until 6pm; should you need stg on Sundays, just go for a market (e.g. the “Gare du Midi” market)Talking about shopping, the best Belgian chocolates to find are -as far as I am concerned- Corne Port Royal and Godiva (both in the immediate surroundings of the Grand Place)...- Avoid the surroundings of 'Gare du Midi'...

When you are going to a place...

by sabsi

When you are going to a place in Belgium check for its French and its Dutch name before you are going or you might get lost, e.g. on the motorway the name of a place on the signs change from the Dutch name to the French name and vice versa as soon as you are on Dutch/French speaking grounds. For example in the French speaking part of Belgium signs to Antwerp say 'Anvers', the change to 'Antwerpen' as soon as you get to a Dutch speaking area. 5 minutes later it might be 'Anvers' again... Very confusing if you don't know what the cities' names are...

A day at the beach: NOOOOO

by chanzey

One thing I can surely recommend is staying clear of the Belgian seaside. Don't go there! Check out the weather before you might want to head for the beach and cancel your trip when a they say it's going to be a great day and b it's somewhere between May and September. Hoards of Belgian and German tourists heading for the same stretch of sand are a health risk you should avoid when possible. No, I'm kidding. A bit. The sealine is not one of my favorite places because there are highrise (6 storey) buildings right along the beach. But do cross the border with Holland, go to the beach there! There are wide beaches, dunes, birds, seals (sometimes) - what more can you want?
