  • Getting around Belgium is cheap and easy, which makes up for the rather expensive, and often heavily booked, accommodation. While there are plenty of buses and hiring a car is an easy enough option, the country's transport system is dominated by its efficient rail network. The fastest services are the InterCity trains, backed up by InterRegional and local trains. In the more remote areas, buses take up the slack. There's a good public transport system (including trams and a small metro system in Brussels and Antwerp). Taxis, which lurk outside most train stations, are metered and expensive. Cycling is popular in the flat north and many roads have separate lanes for bikes. Railway stations rent bikes. It's also possible to hire a boat to cruise along the many rivers and canals.

  • OK, now you know you need a map. There's another reason why you need one, and it's called detours. There are lots of those, and although you're supposed to follow the signs you'll find sooner or later that there's no sign on an important point. At that moment you'll have to make up your own choice of direction. At that moment you'll be glad you have a map. You can also try to ignore the detour. Often it is easy to figure out an alternative route of your own, one that is much shorter than the official one. In that case you need a good sense of direction.

    Description of local transportation

  • We drove mostly by car around Belgium but we used (I mean me and a friend) also train, bus, metro, tram. The price of the local transport in Flanders is 0.75 Euro per zone. Better buy a card and use it for longer time. The petrol is around 1.00 ------- 1.50 Euro. these are the prices of Euro 95 and Super Plus 98, the most used petrol there as I know.
The Train ticket is very reasable, you can use it one year and it costs about 40 Euro for ten travellings.

  • You may drive in Belgium if you are 18 years or older and carrying a full UK drivers licence - if it has no photo you MUST have your passport with you. You must also carry the vehicle registration documents and if you are not the registered owner you should be in possession of a letter from the registered owner granting you permission. Insurance must be adequate and a green card is advisable (insurance company will usually provide you with one of these).

Headlights MUST be converted (converter packs can be purchased at all motoring stores in UK and also at ferry terminal). In poor daylight sdipped headlights MUST be used.

You MUST carry a fire extinguisher, a reflective jacket and a warning triangle.

A first aid kit is advised.

If you have an EU registration plate (with the 12 stars) you no longer need to display a GB sticker.

Speed limits are : Urban 50kph Open road 90kph Motorways 120kph

  • When you travel between the different cities in belgium without special tourbusses you can better take the public transportation. To every little villages in Belgium you will find a bus or a train that goes to there. It's not very cheap but also not very expensive.

  • When in Belgium, get a day ticket (~4EUR) or a 3-day ticket (~10EUR). You can use it in the city transport (bus, metro, tram) for a unlimited number of travels.
